Is my computer no longer good enough?

If someone with a bit of Tech know how or some one with a similar system could let me know I can just give up trying to problem solve and just try to live with sub par performance.

Issue : I used to be able to happily play with two clients open and running Eve on max settings with no issues and a steady 60 fps on both toons.

After some patch I cant remember which, (it was a few ago) I now cant even run one on max settings let alone two. I have adjusted the settings to medium and the fps fluctuates between 40 and 60 fps on one client. I don't even bother to try two any more. The issue seemed to start over night and I feel it is a massive dip in performance to occur so quickly.

I have tried a number of things to try and fix the issue : roll back graphics card drives, system diagnostic with the hell of Dell to make sure everything is working ok. Run Eve as the administrator.

I only really use this thing to play eve so I do not have a large catalogue of games to compare performance with, saying that Guildwars 2, world of tanks and Elder scrolls Online seem to be fine.

My system is:
17 in Alienware laptop (I will not be buying Dell again but that is another story)
Intel i7-3740QM CPU
16 Gb ram
Windows 8.1 64-bit

I would have hoped that the above would have been enough to run eve at Max for a few years. Can anyone let me know if they can play at max on the above configuration or below please. Or suggest what I might be able to do to fix the issue.

Thanks in advance

Was it the UI update? That one tended to throw a lot of computers that were on the borderline over the edge. They also changed the rendering engine for ships. For the UI try going to the UI settings (General settings) and turning off window blur (though with your system I doubt it's that). Other than that it's just a case of dropping the settings a bit.

I have a $90 windows tablet that runs EVE on low settings so I can't imagine your laptop is incapable of running EVE.

Don't laugh at Alienware. That solves nothing. Instead, laugh at the people who bought it at full price, for the joke was on them all along.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

As a matter of fact now you mention it, it was probably after that patch, I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I have previously turned off window blur and put the transparency to zero but it hasn't made much of a difference. I looks like I will just have to live with playing on lower settings. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

As for the other replies in relation to the Alienware Laptop. I am unable to have a desk top in my home so I am limited to using a laptop which sucks when it comes to upgrading parts. But I can tell you now that I would never buy an Alienware item again so you are preaching to the converted on that front.

Waaaaiiit. You said "rolled back". Did you mean "rolled back" as in that windoze option to reset windows to default again?

If yes, you need to do windoze update and reinstall your graphic drivers again. That may fix it.

Check and clean all fans and heatsinks.

The CPU & GPU may be throttling because of heat.

I've cooked two gaming-grade laptops (one internal power supply, and two video boards on the other).

Make sure you're running in DX11 as opposed to DX9 from the launcher maybe?

No sorry, I meant that I installed and older version of the drivers, to see if the up to date version was the problem. Made no difference.

Its worth a go I guess, I've never cleaned them. I'll buy some compressed air and give them a blast. I don't think this is the reason as the performance issues are from when I first log in so I cant imagine that the temps would have had chance to become an issue. But worth a punt. Thanks

Remember that if your GPU doesnt fully support DX11, it will run it in partial software mode, slowing things down. Try DX9 to see if you get a speed boost. You didnt say what GPU that laptop has, so just spitballing here.

Also make sure your video drivers are the latest possible.

Dont forget, you can upgrade to Windows 10, its working fantastic for me and could give your laptop a boost, for free.

check your cpu isnt parking its cores

i have a lower spec dell xps with 8gig ram and a i7 cpu, for some reason my cpu's parked half the cores, caused cpu spikes and terrible eve performance. unparked them and the laptop started using the cpu to its full potential and sorted it.

I run 1 client on max settings, when i run 2 clients i set both on low

Might also want a to run Linked Shell Extension or something. Now that there is a new cache system, one client might be hogging the cache and slowing the other down while it begs for resources.

I have an Asus laptop with similar specs, but with a GTX 660 and began having some odd issues with my framerate. In some places, my framerate would halve (If interval one was selected, I would drop from 60 to 30. If interval immediate was selected, I would go from ~200 to ~100)

Turns out, something odd was happening with the dynamic shadow stuff. I've since turned off shadows, and now all is well. (It only seems to turn off the new dynamic shadows that they added in a previous patch, so everything still looks pretty)

no its not turbo boost, laptops park cores to save power, you need to actually unpark them via editing the registry

Do you have integrated gpu...for some reason eve is one of few games that don't trigger dedicated gpu when laptop option is to use gpu it see fit for applications.

its a long shot but try to tell your lapi to use dedicated graphic all the time.
