Shutting down stargates

I've been browsing through the feedback on Ageis and its got me to thinking: under what situation would you allow a defensive mechanic that would both disable the stargates exiting a target system and prevent anyone from logging off their ships in space for a set time limit?

Discuss.

A defensive mechanism such as that sounds incredible overpowered, and will most likely be abused to the extremes.

100% safe ratting/mining systems are bad, okay?

Agreed. What I'm wondering is does anyone envision a situation whereby such a mechanic would be justified for defensive purposes. Personally I could never support an idea that would ever stop anyone from getting into a system, so I'm more interested in situations whereby no one could get out.

Which would then be used to create 100% safe ratting systems, by locking down one end of a dead end pipe.

Very good point. Time limit though - 30mins?

Must be one of the recent changes all over the place or at least one veteran would remember the old days when the band of developers were shooting the stargates right after downtime to do just that.

Wasn't liked by someone and now gates have a trillion ehp.

wait - a corp/alliance actually shot stargates offline?
sweet!

For posting an idea into F&I: come up with idea, try and think how people could abuse this, try to fix your idea - loop the process until you can't see how it could be abused, then post to the forums to let us figure out how to abuse it..... If your idea can be abused, it WILL be.

Still too powerful. Just means that instead of locking it out permanently, you'd just lock the door whenever a hostile gang rolls through.

Could be bypassed by using a cyno or covered cyno but I go with it is strong at the moment.

It might be differant if there would be Jumpdrives that did not need a cyno there was a thread on this afew days ago.

It might be a valid idea when player build stargates arrive and both sides are owned by the same alliance/corporation.
Defender deactivates the gate attacker has to hack/entosis its side to reopen. It would give the possibility to delay an attacking force but it si still very strong.

Pretty much 2020 idea but could be interesting

No, there should be less barriers for accessing systems not more.

Yeah they did and kept their ratting space save until the next downtime but those were a little different back then and every so often TQ had you reboot at prime times EU/US timezones or some nodes were having a bad day and you couldn't go through a whole constallation.

I'll better stop..

Ya there would have to be very specific rules to prevent this. Like ship must remain present to keep the gate locked out, the lock out is for 10 minutes max with an hour space aids delay, and a 1 minute warm up with the entosis. When I first saw the post I thought it would provide FC's a nice tactical option to force enemies into a locked out gate.

Make the warm-up time be 1 entosis cycle. Want faster loading? Fit the costlier T2 mod. Because T1 will be really random at keeping people at bay. Blink
