Eve in Fulldome?

The extremely civilised manager of our local 3D planetarium tells me that the only impediment to me using their dual 4K projectors to play Eve (and die happy) is the fact that it probably wouldn't actually display very well....

So, I hoped that someone with more technical expertise the me (and a spare five minutes) might be able to solve this ? I'll happily make tea in return :)

Cheers

Wow! Now that would be an epic way to play!!!

I would guess it has something to do with native resolutions.

Indeed. Graphics cards to handle 4K and the machine to back that up.

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

My guess is the planetarium projectors go through a fish eye lens, so to cover a full half sphere. The scene we see when playing Eve is far from half the sky, I think the corner to corner angle covered is around 90 degrees. If you displayed the eve space scene though their fish eye lens, there would be rather large distortions. For example, the HUD circle would be squashed into an ellipse. Targeted ships would also not be circles, but squashed.

Now, if you ran Eve in windowed mode, and shrunk the window to about half the screen size, then it might not be too bad. The Hud would still be distorted, but planets and moons that were near the edge of the screen (and currently look distorted) may look properly circular.

Edit: If he is actually willing to let you try it, you should absolutely do so. What could possibly go wrong that would have lasting consequences?

Yep, it's the age old fish eye issue :) I'd very simply hoped the edges could be - ahem - bent in like one does on a projector at work.............

And I had also fretted about my graphics card despite the fact that I've only just got away from using laptops and procured my first nvidia thingy.

Still, I hope it's not unreasonable that - in my excitement at the distant prospect - I blatantly didn't think any of this through (offer to make tea stands if anyone can solve it....)

Overlapping projectors isn't as simple as it may seem.

One has to correct for the different positions of the projectors, including brightness & colour caused by different hardware and differing distances from the viewer

Combining edges is really difficult, as stuff that overlaps appears to have the wrong colour & brightness unless corrected.

^^ yep, or AR glasses/head-set until adequate holographic projection can be improved.

I think projecting a real-time flat image onto dome shaped geometry may be a little problematic. A shader could do it though. Or maybe a custom video driver.

I'm in it for the money

You can burn in an image both into the projection screen and the projectors LCD panel (because as far as I know, that's what they usually use).

However, both aren't very likely, as the latter has been a non issue for years with modern panels and the former would take ages to show.

I think you guys are missing the most difficult part of this whole thing.... if the UI/Icons get burned in, then just how in the hell am I going to get Platypus content in the hands of all the people complaining about it!?!?!?!?!?!

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Spontaneous thought would be to play it widescreen (with black borders), that way you might just be able to get it to project properly and be able to look left to right without things being stretched too much.

But not sure how it would actually fit well, think more of a like 4000x1000 bent to a 180 degree view?

Many thanks for the replies
