Returning player seeking incursion advice

I did some incursion running back in the day, when they were new, fresh, and extremely lucrative, but none in the years since.
I have just resubscribed after a break and am looking at giving incursions a try again, probably before I dive back out to sov-nullsec and all those other changes.

I’ve done some searching (forums search facility fails for me) and chat-room stalking and am probably going to try align with Valhalla / Vanguard since they seem to be active and switched-on.

Have purchased a brand-new bowhead and already own the ship types on the lists of the groups I’ve looked at. What I am not entirely clear on is the modern-day relative merit of the various ships, and what gets used and prioritised in today’s incursion running fleets. I previously flew machariels and basilisks but now it looks like scimis are the (shield) logi-of-choice and that vindis are preferred over machs for BS DPS. I was planning to load a BS and a mixture of shield / armor logi into the bowhead and go join in … just I am not yet confident on what my priorities should be.

Skills and isk are not much of an issue. I have high level fitting / support skills, logi skills pretty much perfect in all modalities, and large weapon specialists and BSs are all 4s. I’m fine with armor or shield setups, altho prefer shield for PvE efforts. Prior to taking a break I was an established and experienced player so I have a few isk lying around in my wallet, and already have the ships and many of the high-end fittings that those shiny fleets look for.

Any / all advice would be welcome, yes even if it involves sex and travel. Are there any substantially better groups than Valhalla / Vanguard? Are basilisks really history? Would a vindi be preferable to a mach? Tell me more, tell me all … please :-)

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

I've personally only ever flown for Warp To Me, but I believe their preferences are the same as for the other (less cool P ) groups. They only fly in HQ's though, so that's were my experience is. I believe most groups primarily do HQ's as well? Not sure on that one though.

Basi's are still needed for cap transfer. More or less you need 3ish basi's in order to even fly HQ sites. Above that, scimi's are usually preferred for link bonuses. That said, both are accepted, and while you are technically able to fly with nothing but basi logi's, you cannot do so with nothing but scimi's.

Vindi's are definitely the DPS ship of choice. Their dps is simply way higher than Mach's. Not sure if in Vanguard sites warp speed > than dps, if so then I would imagine Mach's would be the preferred choice for their warp speed bonus. You may also want to look into getting a set of Ascendancy implants for the warp speed buff. I believe some of the high end vanguard groups require a high grade set to get into fleet. The only thing that a Mach is really preferred for in HQ sites is as an MTAC to drag the shield thingies in TCRC's.

Again, my experience is with HQ's, so if you're looking specifically for Vanguard info, keep looking P Hope I've been helpful either way Smile

Thanks. I think I will go find and dust off a vindi, and looks like I should drop a basi or two onto the hauler also.

Arty fit Mach will still get you a seat as long as it is fit correctly. Snipers are always needed.

my biggest problem with incursions was always figuring out which ship to fly. my second biggest problem was the travel plus wait time.

vindi easily has the most dps, but the lowest range, and the dank web bonus. mach has huge alpha at long ranges, but the lowest dps. where the nightmare has a lot of range, can quickly swap ammo to shoot at different ranges, with alpha and DPS somewhere in the middle.

I remember being in an ISN fleet a while back (like one of the two or three times I actually tried incursions) and we got crushed by a isboxer using a nightmare fleet. the coordinated alpha was too much to deal with.

Good thing that person can't do that anymore.

hmmm, good points, thanks.

The mach-sniper comment has me wondering whether I have missed a wee small detail in the fittings. I just 'assumed' those high-slot guns were A/Cs, like I used on all my other PvE machs. Perhaps they're actually arties ... a completely different kettle of fish.

I will recheck that when i am next able to get ingame.

With the tiericide Machs were swapped to Artillery to volley **** off the field/sniper dps.

Thanks DMC.
Things have changed a fair bit. Am going to give incursions a go and then mebbe a bit of intensive missioning ... looks like those burners are a challenge and can spin some decent income.
Given what I have read it seems that hisec PvE income potential has improved significantly.
I daresay I will return to null and the evil empire eventually, but want to have a decent look at hisec first.

I prefer using the nightmare. no ammo issues, i know you will use a bow head, I normally roll an alt in a orca, and if warp to me and ISN arn't running, it happens, you can put in a few LSE's and safely join the other pub fleets. Not sure you can do the same in a mach.
But that's just a bias to spiky things.. maybe :)

... What next ??

lol, thanks, I think I like the mach kinda like you like your spikey things. Never flown a nightmare - confession.

I've now skilled-up ore-freighter and purchased a bowhead. It has a mach, a vindi, a scimi, a basi, a prowler, and cheetah, and a stiletto in the hangar. I stripped the ships (it scanned at over 10b with everything fitted ... an open invitation to gankers I figured) and hauled the modules separately in the prowler.

Having discovered a few overlooked modules I've now also resurrected an alt to be my gopher, and will swap his booster ship (once I find out what gets used) for the prowler and have him carrying the shiny-stuff in the prowler while I haul-ship in the bowhead.

So much for logistics, now all I need to do is to get some fleet experience :-)

This is the smartest thing I have seen someone do in a while. Freighter haulers need to pay attention to this.

Ahhhh, I wish I could accept / claim that cleverness. Alas no, it is just that I have done my fair share of ganking, including miniluv, and have a rather acute appreciation of what goes on.
