How do I start trading?

DISCLAIMER: Noob here. I lost 500 million ISK in collateral during a hauling run today. I really want to replace that through trade.

I have no experience with the market on EVE. I asked for help, but I'm only being fed with really elusive bullsh*t such as "buy what will turn out to be profitable". I have no idea on what I should do to start making ISK, I have to urgently patch up the ISK hole that I just made and continue making money till I understand the market by myself.

So, how do I start trading for profit?

Best way to start out, would be to place Regional buy orders on high volume items - such as tech 2 modules and ships. Then, just sell them exactly where they are.

Don't worry about people not buying it, because they will. There are lots of people flying around from system to system. That's why it has to be commonly used tech 2 modules, ships, or the more expensive commonly used tech 1 modules. You may have some stuff that would take a long time to sell. But even if they are not sold, the profit that you've already made is more than enough to cover it.

Then, pull up the Star Map, and filter systems based on "Number of pilots jumped in the last hour, or last 24 hours" or something along those lines. You want to spot all the systems with high traffic. Then buy in Jita, and sell in that system.

Also, place Regional buy orders for minerals, but make sure you set a minimum quantity. Then, sell the minerals exactly where they are. And place Regional buy orders for Isotopes with minimum quantity, and sell the Isotopes exactly where they are. Across all regions.

If the batch of Minerals / Isotopes is large enough, contract it to Red Frog (or whoever the popular freight service is right now), and haul it the nearest hub. Sell it to buy orders there.

If someone sells you a huge batch of minerals / isotopes in low sec, use your own jump freighter to move it.

To minimize the chance of getting ganked, make sure your Jump Freighter Alt is in NPC corp. If there is Faction Warfare going on against your faction, stay away from those systems.

You want to make it where, if your opponent ganks you, they will lose a similar amount of ISK to Concorde. So take this into consideration when you decide how much cargo to carry.

That's why you use Hauling service whenever possible (plus you don't have time to do all that hauling). Only use Jump Freighter for that 1 jump to get your stuff out of low sec. When your stuff is in High Sec, contract it to a hauling service or use a regular freighter. If you freight your own stuff, limit your cargo so it's not worth it for people to gank you.

What do you mean by "selling them where they are"?
And thanks for the helpful response :)

I mean just place a sell order, in the exact same location that you bought the item. Don't need to move it.

This is why I outsource hauling.

Return isn't worth the risk as you just found out, and there's plenty of useful idiots that will do it for me. Not to mention, training Contracting to 4 or even 5 is quicker than learning to fly a Charon.

I made my first billion exploiting the difference in pricing between Lonetrek, Citadel, and the Forge regions. Essentially figuring out what I could buy cheaply in the Lonetrek/citadel regions and haul to Jita. And vice versa. Two caveats - you'll never get 'rich' doing this. The second is don't get caught by the 'margin trading' scam - Google it for details. Use Eve central to help find deals.

A better way is to practice arbitrage across regions and primarily trade hubs. Arbitrage is just a fancy term for exploiting price differences across markets. So if you haul - do you have a favorite route? Figure out what is low priced in Jita and sells for higher price in that area. Buy (immediate buys or for more profit through a buy order) - then list there. If you want to only update prices infrequently you will need to find lesser traded goods or your sales will be eaten by someone else who '0.01' ISK it. Use one of the many spreadsheets, Eve central, Evernus, etc to help run your trading.

Good luck.
