1. in the future does it make sense for capsuleers being able to donate unused CPU space to help boost ccp's projects or a community made project

2. what would those projects look like

3. when can we expect something like this

4. how much effort would something like this require

Do you mean distributed processing like Bit Coins? For what? Compiling code?

CCP - Building ant hills and magnifying glasses for fat kids

Not even once

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

i think its mostly a screensaver that you can download, the screensaver allows you to pick which organization you want to lend your cpu power to while you are afk. there might be phone apps for this too im not sure.

i suppose this kind of thing is good for projects which require the organization to store a lot of data, but whenever they want to make use of that data it takes a lot of computer power to access it all and make sense of it. thats just my guess, i dont know enough about lending cpu.

Not sure what CCP could use "cloud" type processing power for. Surely not for TQ, since the bandwidth and latency would likely be way too bad. And compared to the Processing power that TQ has, about every other task in game development is peanuts. It's not like they are mining bitcoins or anything.

what about creating a 'virtual reality eve map' in upcoming platforms such as googles project tango or Valves headset, would that require a lot of cpu? im guessing latency is not that big of an issue here since its just a map

So it's like SETI, but for no purpose? ...'k... The gud idea fairy is certainly busy around here.

I remember SETI. EVE is real, but not that real.

Maybe a lore-based desktop app that phones home when it is turned on and off. Make it look flashy like SETI, as if it is decrypting Jove tech... a flashy widget. IG stuff could be based on milestones, like... orthographic diagrams of Jove ships that can make nice wallpapers or posters.

Because it needs to be light on dev time, right. A dummy SETI app and a database, and occasional pieces of art.

Other than that, I got nothin'

My electricity bill is high enough because of Eve, without lending CCP my CPU when I don't need it Lol

i wonder if its possible to recreate a simulated version of the most epic and huge battles in eves history and then allowing capsuleers to chip in with their cpu power so that outside guests who are new to eve can sneak a peak at the scale of battles in a immersive way rather than watching it on youtube

Why go out of your way to reinvent the wheel?

I'd imagine YouTube's processing power outweighs ours.

ye probably.. also it might even be easier to create a VR experience out of the past battles as opposed to creating a cinematic 3d experience

Meh.

We could all just pitch in and pony up some money so CCP can just download some more RAM.

New Eden isn't nice. It isn't friendly. It isn't very hospitiable. Good thing there are people here to shoot in the face.

Want to make New Eden a nice place? Try this out.

Data crunching. It's seriously not what CCP is into, nor should be. That's all such distributed computing clusters do, crunch mass data.
Applied to CCP: Crunch chat logs?

What could a game studio possibly want enormous amounts of CPU cycles for? Game design is not a processor-intensive activity.

Actually, a replay function doesn't need all that much processing power. just save the location, hp, module cycles and movement verctor of every object on the grid every server tick (maybe even just every 5 server ticks and interpolate the rest) and replay it in the client. This could potentially even be done locally, since every player on the grid has this data. And the files would probably be tiny. (compared to video files)

I remember Lineage 2 having a feature like that, and that game had ridiculously huge battles way back when.

By the way - this would really be a nice feature to have. It would make recording battles so much easier, since you could have the recording as long as someone willing to share his replay was still on the grid. No need for Fraps or to a cloaky alt 100km from the battle in order to not die.

Combine it with some nice camera controls, maybe even a free cam and you'd have a pretty awesome feature.

If you have CPU to spare, you're not running enough EVE clients.
