They used to command a 50-75% premium over high sec ores. I just recently checked on http://www.eve-calculator.com/mining/income_calculator/ore.html and they're now only 10% above Veldspar! There's absolutely no reason to venture out to low sec to mine. Is it because of null sec bears? I'm going to blame them somehow. -_-

Supply and demand.

Trit and Pye is in high demand. The highends are oversupplied.

It's not so much that hem/hed has crashed, as much as the need for trit/pye and therefore veld has gone up a lot.

You still have a 50%+ premium over Omber and 20%+ over Plag.

But yes you surmise well - the small margin over Veld prob doesn't warrant trips to lowsec anymore.

There has never been a reason for anyone with common sense to consider mining in low sec system. I will admit to doing it once and losing a mining vessel. It's obviously not an intelligent thing to be doing in New Eden.

The composition of Hedbergite & Hemorphite along with all the other ores that can be found in low & null-sec were changed quite radically after Fanfest this year. I don't have the figures to hand but I think the amount of Nocxium & Zydrine were dropped in those two ore types and the amount of high ends that most miners can get elsewhere easily were added instead. Shortly afterwards the mineral/ore prices collapsed generally with a few exceptions and mining as a career option became a less favourable choice as a result.

I believe CCP Fozzie was advised by one player to make this change and arguably it hasn't been a good decision. Sad

If anchored bubbles would only last for 2 hours, nullsec ore prices would explode though.

This. There are fewer miners doing the low end mining in high sec anymore.
