Do you feel CCP could do more to combat the bots?

Simple yes or no answer please and then list your reasons why.

yes. they could remove CONCORD for a week. Twisted

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Impossible to answer since we have no idea what measures / tools CCP have in place to combat bots and RMT actions.

We do not know how many people they are banning for using bots or for selling isk to RMT sites for RL money.

If you spend 5 minutes looking on dotlan will find many systems in null sec that look like bots could be in operation and you would hope CCP investigate those systems.

Of course nothing CCP says on the matter does any good as the perception, rightly or wrongly, amongst the majority of forum users is that CCP lets the null sec alliances get away with both botting and selling isk for real life money because.. well to be honest I can not be bothered to list the numerous reason people have mentioned.

Time and again these posts appear and so far I can recall, noa Dev has responded to any of number of allegations made that they do not do enough or they turn a blind eye to the problem.

I suspect that they never will simply because regardless what they say on the matter people will believe what they want to believe and even if CCP did release any figures, I am pretty sure most people would just say its all made up.

There are many conspiracy theories regarding which alliance does what and that CCP does this and that when it comes to this matter but funny enough there is rarely any proof provided.

Other then looking at dotlan and seeing some systems where the numbers suggest something other then normal play is happening, I have yet to see any evidence of major botting / RMT operations happening.

As for bots in high sec such as mission or mining bots, again I have not personally seen swarms of bots flying about in every system as some people suggest.

I have seen a few ships that behave like they could be bots and used the report function but other then that, I have not seen 100's.

Can't be done.

Bot runners hold far too many subscriptions for CCP to clamp down on them.
If they started truly banning accounts running bots, CCP would lose such a massive chunk of cash flow, the company would go belly up. Same things applies accounts of RMT'ers.

I was in high sec last night, and some guy in local had 10 accounts all identically named, all in mining boats.
The name was something like Postie, and the names went Postie10 - Postie19.

Now, OF COURSE he was not botting those. I am SURE he was actually running 10 mining boats simultaneously.
And no way CCP would even begin to investigate something like that, because the economic ramifications are too huge.

Yes.

But they won't. Why? Botters & RMT players pay a sub, and CCP needs subs. They also have 20% less of a head-count at CCP these days, so I really doubt policing bots and RMT is very high on their list of priorities currently.

There's a million angry citizens looking down their tubes..at me.

It generally appears to be allowed to bot as long as you don't RMT.

Unless you petition the botter 5 times that is.

Yes. They could google up RMT sites and sic lawyers on them. I found two sites today, thrown up on a site's google widget. A while back, I found one from a ******* facebook ad. Naturally, I copied the URLs into a petition.
EVE RMT sites are everywhere, and easily found.

As far as I know those sites do not break any laws.

Swagvault I believe is one of the biggest RMT sites in the world with offices in both North America and China and have been operating for many years now.

They have never been taken to court by any MMO Operator.

Inevitably, the rewards gained from botting will ensure that botting always exists in some form, despite the resources invested to halt it. Changes to core game mechanics to prevent botting would be a huge, huge undertaking and CCP wouldn't even remotely consider it.

Realistically, nothing they do will stop botting, nothing they do will stop whiners. So CCP chooses the path of least resistance, ignore it all and focus on :AWSUM: and shiny things.

Yeah cos its REALLY hard to run 10 mining accounts..... thats sooo difficult to do.....

Have you even LOOKED at the ways to do this legitimately? No you clearly haven't and are just making unfounded accusations based on your own lack of knowledge. There are several (legal) pieces of software like synergy that will help you with this as well. There is one guy who MANUALLY runs 27 accounts....... not mining but for L5 missions and now incursions I believe, all of which require a LOT more user input than mining.

So next time you start throwing accusations around you might want to consider the other possibilities.

Here in lies the root of the problem, of course CCP don't want to ban legit players for botting wrongly and its very hard to be sure that someone IS botting, hell running L4s I feel like I'm a bot sometimes ;)
If you aren't aware btw, CCP a while put tracking systems in place (about 6-12 months ago I think) that caught 2/3 of the major bot systems that are used via their unique signatures and a quite large number of botters got banned and the forums/websites that were selling the bots basically closed down. This shows that ARE making efforts to counter them.

To be honest I think a lot of the problem is perception here, if I'm doing something boring like running lvl 4s that don't require much attention, I'll be off doing stuff on other accounts so I probably won't respond. This makes you think they are bots when in fact its just someone not paying much attention.

Also the real RMT botters WILL respond exactly like a real player when communicated with, not because its a very smart bot, but because there is a real person sitting there with a whole batch of computers running 50-100 + bots in some sweatshop. Anyone comms him and the bot program will alert him to it so he can respond.

But hey no, its much more fun to scream blue murder based on random, poorly thought out and unsupported drivel isn't it......

YES.

Take care of the fact that miners are in reality, nothing but complete sitting ducks if they want to fit their ships to mine effectively and you'll find the problem will naturally start to sort itself out. Even when fitted for maximum isk gains, the mining profession is still the lowest paid for the time, effort and risk put in for the majority of players. The bots are nothing but the symptom of a flawed system and flawed ways of thinking. Don't just try to fix the symptom, fix the cause.

The PVP pilots out there who argue how all the miners need to do is fit defensive modules in every avaliable slot and align, should try doing something similarly useless considering their chosen profession. Go on, put mining lasers or something as equally useless on your combat boats and maybe just float there. Do everything that is counterproductive towards what you are there to do. See how effective and fun your ships are to fly. Do and fit everything that makes you as useless as possible at what you want to do. It's the way it's meant to be played right? Toughen up and understand that that's what eve is all about you cry baby!

Rant :P

P.S. not every miner is a botter as some like to insinuate. From my limited time playing, most aren't. Botters will naturally run numerous characters to get the required amounts of ore to make it worth while.

Strange, I thought keep your mining ship alive is part of mining.

I'd like to know how you mine in an exploded ship.

You want to max out your isk/hour, then you take risks for it. Love the way you want some special bonus no-one else gets to increase their isk/hour without increasing the risk.

How is aligning not part of the mining profession either? Gives you virtual immunity to been killed for a small amount of effort, but I guess you just want to sit there earning isk while watching a film in perfect safety without having to put any effort in at all don't you.......

BTW, defensive modules AREN'T pvp equipment, scrams, webs, ecm e.t.c. are pvp equipment.
Defensive equipment is something ALL ships fit, not just PvPers, same with weapons and drones. They have MANY other uses besides PvP. So yes PvPers DO have to fit general, not PvP specific gear just like miners.

^ just edited it slightly to make my point clearer for you.

Also, true aligning means not just pointing in the direction you want to be able to warp too, it's also moving in that direction to avoid the long & dangerous acceleration time of mining vessels. Considering the mining lasers limited range, that means you often out range the rocks before you fill your cargo and that's assuming you are not trying to fill a can or something. What happens when you are out of range? You warp off and then warp back to your original position? Or maybe turn around and get closer again so you can then realign to your warp out and repeat (this one completely defeats the aligning purpose)? Neither of those two scenarios do anything but make mining even less profitable than it is already. The time wasted cuts deeply into the already low bottom line.

Yes-

I feel it is very easy to detect the bots, I have them in spades where I mine. Always the ice miners. You gank them, they are back the next day, no tears, no hate mail, just a new Retriever until they train up for hulk.
