When a character is sold to another player, perhaps as part of the "transfer fee" paid in PLEX to CCP a name change and history wipe ought to be *mandatory*

With the exception of highly offensive names, maybe this ought to be the only way a name change is permitted - that character has to be sold by one player account to a different player account, verified as such by CCP.

Name changing is game breaking, and as such i (we) hope it never comes to pass.

In any circumstance other than transfer to a new owner, I whole-heartedly agree.

Given that it is a bannable offence to impersonate another player, including by using a character purchased from the bazaar, it does not follow that a name change/history wipe would not just be handy but maybe should even be mandatory when a character changes owners.



I see your point but this is no more or less relevant in terms of risk (either impact or probability) than said scammer rolling a new character or buying a "clean" one from the bazaar. It is also easily mitigated: first, make it cost PLEX. Second, as part of the transfer CCP could easily verify the accounts of the seller and the buyer have no obvious indicators or shared ownership (e.g. no common username, password, registered email address, payment method or IP address history). The name change would only be mandated when a character is actually transferred from one owner to another.

Besides, people are lazy. I bought a character with no plan at all to AWOX but it would have been so easy...that character was still on all sorts of mailing lists, and the "hey dude come join fleet" in game messages didn't stop until six months after I bought it. A mandatory name change/wipe would have prevented me from using that character to attempt an AWOX not enabled it.
