Eve on MiFi

Sadly I've moved out into the middle of nowhere with the only Internet options being dialup or a MiFi connection. All of the reviews are a mixed bag for gaming. Some say it's fine and you'll experience some lag while others say it's virtually unplayable. There's an older thread on the forums but I was hoping to get the latest feedback. Do any of you play eve exclusively from a MiFi connection? If so how is your game experience and about how much data is used?

I know this is suboptimal and DSL/cable is a better option but it's all I've got at this point.

How playable it is going to be will depend entirely on your carrier. The data usage of the game alone is negligible, unless you count big patches or have to redownload the client.

A friend of mine played Eve on a MiFi for more than a year without a problem. His connection was actually quite good, though he did suffer from roughly one reset a night where he was back online by the time his client was restarted.

We once had a trucker on our alliance who used 3g to play eve and he played fine. But when he was in 1x areas, he could only use teamspeak... and he was choppy.

Yeah it should totally work, i used it over a year long and i was under 40KByte/sec for most of the time.
Wouldn't count on large fleetfights though...

eve was originally built to be played on dialup connections, not sure now though
but it does use significantly less bandwidth than many other MMO's

the mifi should be fine

living in slow broadband areas sucks. Maybe you should look at a 3G or 4G solution, or perhaps speak to your neighbors or local community about investing in placing your own Fiber. I live in the UK and many small villages here have come together to dig up the ground and lay there own Fiber cables, with the help of community friendly broadband suppliers.

Eve is still playable over dial-up. Still dual account that way, occasionally. But it is somewhat laggy.

As far as MiFi out in the middle of nowhere goes, it's fine. The client handles the changes between connection types (HSPA, HSUPA, HSDPA, 3G etc.) well. Sometimes you will hang up for a little while if you drop packets because of the change but rarely disconnect.

The biggest drawback will depend on the service you get. Many providers in the UK restrict or outright block all std VOIP packets, so check carefully before purchasing. It is also handy if you have some way to test the signal you can receive as well. The provider that is considered to provide the best connection for my location doesn't actually give me anything better than GPRS whereas I can reliably get HSPA with one of the others.

If you are in the UK you are safe in the knowledge the governments promised everyone 2meg broadband by 2012

oops sorry that was the only government.
The new ones delayed that

to 2015. :/

At home I am on 0.5Meg ADSL. At least its broadband! In my city center Uni accommodation I have 100meg (50 meg upload) Fiber.

Its a MASSIVE difference when I go between uni and home! I can just do 100+ fleet battles and be on coms without too much lag. Its mainly the GFX lag :P

I travel a lot. I used to play Eve on a 3G Verizon mifi, it was good for missions and PI. I upgraded to a 4G mifi and it's great. I can run teamspeak and 2 clients. I recommend it. Although some months when traveling weeks at a time, I get a notice that I've maxed it out. Make sure you get a good plan, if your provider offers choices.

Oh one other thing, it doesn't matter how fast your mifi is if 1) your in an area with poor reception or 2) you have 4g, but your in an area which still only handles 3G.

Hops this helps!
