I would appreciate your viewpoints on a feline conundrum...

Hi,

I have an issue involving a cat that needs a little background :

Our neighbours have an adorable adolescent moggy (nothing pedigree, but a torty) that they had as a kitten. Nobody buys cats around here btw they drip from every farmhouse etc.

They do not pay it very much heed at all, she is regularly left as many as 4 days to herself without the owners returning (verified) and just to point it out reasonably they have just come back from a 3.5 week holiday after leaving the cat at home. Somebody dropped in sporadically (unverified how sporadic) to feed but that was it, i personally saw 2 full days and no feed going on.

The cat LOVES company, she spent the 3.5 weeks yowling at our window to be let in and we cant have pets, on occasion though we crumble - especially in storm weather as she is very afraid of high winds, and very obviously so, the yowl becomes truly pleading to be allowed in.

Weve noticed that its looking as though the neighbours have split or something and it even seems as though they are moving out - yes right after the holiday.

My question is that we worry about her and her care in that house. Not so much me but my lady is literally tearful to think about it.

I say cats disappear all the time, wouldnt it be a shame if they couldnt find her....

She sais i should go over and bring up the fact i could offer it a home here if they are to leave, not with us but my family.

I was wondering what anyone here has to say about it ? All or any viewpoints listened to.

We are desperately trying to find angles on this.

EDIT : I should point out we dont know the neighbour very well other than picking her washing up off the floor once and hanging it on our line till she came home and a few hello's as we pass by. Thats the difficulty.

A cat was abandoned on my street a few years back, it is now my cat and his name is Zulu and I love him. I love him so much I spent $2300 on vet bills when it was discovered he has diabeetus (gotta say it like Wilford Brimley)

I say take the cat!

I would suggest one of two possible routes:

1 - Talk to the neighbour just mention that whilst they were away she looked lonely and you didnt see much of the cat sitter and you were a bit worried about her being alone for so long.

2 - Talk to the RSPCA/ASPCA (whatever it is where you live) and explain whats going on and you could offer her home if needed. They will probably send someone out to have a chat with the neighbour and then act on whats best for the cat.

I wouldn't recommend making the cat 'disappear', you dont know 100% of the facts and there could be a housebound elderly relative living there that thinks the world of the cat, you could devastate them if you removed her from your neighbours. And if they find out you were responsible you could end up in a lot of hot water.

If you do chat with them and it turns out they couldn't careless about the cat then definitely go to option 2.

In the mean time if the cat does pop over again, just have a quick look over for ticks/fleas, check that shes not too skinny and look out for anything else that looks out of the ordinary (id do a bit of reading on the interwebs first before you do these checks). Again if thinks look worrying option 2 is probably the best course of action (remember having fleas/being on the skinny side can be fairly normal so dont panic if she has fleas or feels a bit thin).

If you are sure they are neglecting it just take it, if you talk to them and the neglect continues and then you take it they will know who took it and they might be ****** enough to try and get you done for theft. Contacting animal welfare is an option, but chances are you might not get the cat depending on how bureaucratic you country's welfare agencies are. The poor thing could also risk being put down to, not all animal welfare agencies have a no healthy kills policy.

If the neighbour seems genuinely upset about the disappearance you can "find" the cat and return it. I would definitely want to be sure the cat is neglected before taking it though.

You should call the ASPCA on them next time they leave it alone

Rainus - hey o7 my man, and she sais hi too Big smile
Totally valid and sort of our conundrum because of what Jhagiti brings up - let them know we know and we may bollocks our chance, or may get it. I hate coin flips... grrr.

Surfin and Jhag totally right about the bringing in the RSPCA BUT the cat isnt outwardly neglected, its more mentally than physically. No im not putting human personality into the animal, its just DAMN lonely and obviously so too.

There are no other people in the house. Just the lady and the man who is never there, well a lot less than the lady anyway and that takes effort!!!.

I think ive decided to front up and say something, ill try to ravel it up in a 'Hey, Happy New Year' kinda way but i doubt it'll cut the whole conversation. Has to be done though i reckon.

Cats are like most pets they like company, perhaps not so much as other animals you can have a cat and go to work all day and it wont be distressed but be pleased to see you when you get in. As you say the cats out in all weather and it sounds like they have no cat flap, anything can happen to it and if the cats fond of you and you can get it a better life I see no harm in it. If they do get upset you can just "find" it, if they don't notice or care then the cats going to be better off.

I'm surprised the cat hasn't moved itself in with you, cats can be like that if people give them affection and food when owners do not take care of them.

I thought I recognised the name but it didnt click - probably because I've been out of game for 6 months. Oops

I think from what you have said talking to them is the better option at this stage, calling in the RSPCA would be a step too far. That being said it might be worth having a chat with the RSPCA advice line they will be better able to advise you on what is considered OK, I can only speak from experience and we dont tend to leave our cats for more that a day or two before putting them in cattery whist we are away.

Here's a novel idea : tell them you grew very fond of that cat and ASK them nicely if they would please donate the cat to you (or even offer to buy it).
Leave out the parts about you thinking they don't take good enough care of her and also leave out the thing about passing it on to your family.
