University of Caille students demand change in language policy

News reaches Gutter Press today, of a campaign by some University of Caille students, demanding a change in the language policy of the University.

The University language policies include a number of rules aimed at stamping out the use of ethnic and other religious insults in an effort to promote the Federal ideals of equality for all citizens.

The current campaign is about the words used to describe artificial people. Gutter Press investigators uncovered a range of opinions on the subject.

"With the growth in use of alternate genesis technologies, such as the Caldari Tube, and other generic processes such as cloning, it is only right to consider the language used to describe these people", said one activist. "Tubers is an insult that makes them sound like a fruit or vegetable, and that's just not right"

"The term 'repli-cant' is loaded with negative assumptions about the artificial person, and is totes denigratory", said another activist. "We want people to use 'repli-can' instead, as it has positive associations"

"Frankly, we find the whole notion of arriving in the world by being launched through a screaming woman's birth canal, to be ridiculous, not to mention unsanitary", said a group of 3 very similar looking activists.

"I read that one of the Coriault Couture designers had one of their models cloned, so they can have a more uniform look for their fashion shows", said a passer-by at the Caille campus.

"Cloned students ? Bah, not an original thought amongst them !", said a retired University of Caille professor, lurking on the library rooftop.

"Words have power, you know", said an Amarr missionary. "That's why they are Written"

"Is this about the Drifters ? I don't understand them at all" said one social studies student, "I mean, like, they don't even wear clothes. How can we possibly relate to people that don't wear fashionable clothes ? It makes no sense !"

Artificial people. Real stories.

You haven't really dealt with University students often enough.

That would depend on the breadth of your interests and your definition of hard work.

I also like to point out that in just about any University the ones who work the hardest also party the hardest, and the more intelligent the person the crazier the ideas they come up with.

While I was attending the University of Caille I noticed almost precisely the opposite. The ones who party the hardest simply spent the longest at parties, doing Crash, talking about how hard they were supposedly working.

If you tend to hang around at a lot of parties doing Crash then I understand how the misunderstanding might take place.

I will say that I'm not alone in the insults I faced in certain undergraduate courses. There is a small but vocal community of men at UC who have some issues with Intaki women, for what reasons I can only guess.

From my experience the ones who are almost reclusive throughout the semesters tend to be the ones who devise the flashiest pyrotechnics and fabricate the most ingenious beer dispensers for the after-exam parties.

Then again different academic institutions probably have different cultures.

No, that's probably truer in my experience. Work hard and then play hard, but it's way more difficult to work and play hard at the same time.

I probably couldn't hear the patriarchy oppressing you over the sound of the cries for my trial as a war criminal. I went to Caille because I was told I'd get the best education in the cluster though, and I was certainly impressed by their Warp Physics department.

Pffffft. University of Caille? More like University of Fail. C-A-S! C-A-S! C-A-S! C-A-S! C-A-S! C-A-S!

You can go to University of Fail and study some poncy worthless major like Art Appreciation (uh, newsflash, idiot - I can appreciate art just fine without a degree!) or you can come to the Centre for Advanced Studies and get a real qualification. You want to design starships? We got that. Want to go into theoretical physics? Done. Want a qualification in ethical hacking? Check and double check. Intelligent data systems? Yep. Architecture? Fine. Electrical engineering? Abso-freakin'-lutely. Terraforming? Okay. String theory?

Uh... string theory? Seriously?

They... they still... they still have that on the books?

Well, uh, I guess every university needs one junk degree...

I personally found the UoC pretty good for the content (their archaeology courses were the best!). They still have a reputation over the quality of their upper courses and some of their material that is deserved...

Then... like most universities, there is probably 90% of people that... maybe did a mistake when applying for it...

It is true that their campuses are very noisy though. It looks more like a gallente cliché than anything else, really.

Ah yes, the University of Caille.

I suppose that, with a student body drawing from all the different worlds of the Federation, they're bound to come up with more than a few oddballs from time to time.

I find the idea of language policies to be somewhat contrary to the goals of a university - free and frank discussion and all that.

"Free" and "frank" discussion within the confines of reasonable conduct expectation, as most things go in the Federation.

See, there's a mischaracterization of the Federation that runs rampant among those outside of it that assumes because it stands for "liberty" and "freedom" that it's basically a chaotic catastrophe of anarchy barely held in check by the presence of groups like the SDII or the police.

The fact is quite the opposite. The Federation would be more easily characterized as "everything in moderation" as there are reasonable expectations and laws to govern equitable treatment, conduct and consideration for your fellow man and for the institutions and businesses that compose the society around you.
