Drone Meta vs Speed Meta

What happens when two capsuleers face off in a Thunderdome-style match (two ships enter, one ship leaves) with each pilot flying one ship of two predominant metas (speed and drones)?

A 36-minute slugfest involving multiple ammo and drone changes, mobile micro jump units, and some very clever piloting.

Enjoy, and be sure to check out the July Thunderdome bracket thread for more good fights.

I hate risk averse, but I like the fight idea. Also happen to be unable to stand that music. I left as soon as it sounded like a guy was repeatedly saying "we're brooklyner". But I also just woke up, so.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

The Ishtar warped off. Must have had something to do with the ******* 70 kilometer comfort zone around it. At that Range, the orthrus was never even a threat to the Ishtar, even though it "lost by concession".

I just muted the sound after a few seconds; seriously terrible music.

So to summarise the Orthus kites the Ishtar for 30 minutes at around 100km shooting at any drones that are launched. It was a pretty boring fight between two of the lamest ships in the current meta. In reality a couple of ishtars would have just volleyed the orthus or anything else for that matter off the field as the Orthus was taking heavy damage from just one flight of the Ishtars bouncers.

Other Thunderdome matches have been more conventional and used mostly short-to-medium range fits. This was the first one that I know of that pitted speed vs drones. Both have absurd engagement range, the Ishtar has excellent application, and the Orthrus has excellent speed. The fact that this one highlighted two oft-complained about mechanics is exactly why I posted it.

Haven't seen the vid yet, but I'm rooting for the speed meta. Just because I really like loud guitars...

Honestly I got tired of kitey things in my blaster ships, so I fit dual 150mm rails on a thorax, the smallest medium railguns with the best tracking, on top of the thorax's tracking bonus and a tracking enhancer I could hit a bit past 20km. To make things even better those guns have the lowest fitting out of any medium hybrid gun. So I could fit a dual rep AND a 800mm plate buffer on the thorax.

I bring it out and a kitey frigate gang shows, you know the current meta, what I fit it to kill. I get sensor disrupted to about 14km lock range.. NOW I know why everybody and their grandmother uses drones.

Who irl seriously still thinks it's a good idea to blare their music over a youtube video? Didn't that go out by 2010? It's like a 300lb hairy guy from Nebraska wearing speedos at a beach.

Admittedly, the volume is rather high. I've been trying to correct it to no avail. This is the first fight I've recorded and posted so bear with me. Blink

I want to hear the clicks and button presses to experience the visceral gameplay

EVE is like a tabletop RPG. Players swear it's fun, but the fun is imperceivable to an observer. Say, of a Youtube video.

Orthrus never stands a chance.

Im an orthrus pilot myself, and to get within 50km of the ishtar to point it means, by and large, death. You can play with ammo choices and whatnot all you want, but if you cant get a point on the enemy, you cant win.

Ishtar just tracks the orthrus too well anywhere within 70km.

Admittedly, ishtar is a good counter to kitey things at the moment.

The way it should be is, kiters counter brawlers, snipers counter kiters, and brawlers counter snipers.

But it does not work this way. In practice, ishtar counters eveything lol, its just too fast for brawlers. Hopefully the nerf will put it back into line.

This was actually my first time flying an Orthrus and I have to admit that it was much harder to fit than I expected. I had heard about it being this awesome solo pwn-mobile, but I just didn't see it. Its speed allows you to dictate the terms of engagement, which is admittedly huge, but without native T2 resists or the HAC MWD bonus it's still at a disadvantage. Against the right targets, sure it'll be great, but it's nowhere near the Ishtar in terms of versatility.

You should never lose against a solo ishtar with an orthrus. Perhaps not in the first engagement.. but with a BIT training it should be easy. tip: dont go further away than about 50,60km.
