EVE Online From a New Players Perspective (short Story)

EVE is the first of it's kind that I have attempted playing, and at first it was exciting, SPACE a whole new way to play a game.... if you can call it playing.

The very first thing I found out when I started playing is something that was not in anyway informed to me. I was never told by anyone or any forum, or any website that EVE Online had "unavoidable/unconsented PvP", which wasn't a huge deal, but I am typically a non-PvP player in any game, but I figured why not I'll give it a shot anyway. Of course I didn't really go looking for that sort of information. I just kinda picked up the trial and had a go with it. Hell, I've been a gamer for 20+ years PC for about 7, and I never once knew about EVE Online, until I heard about No Man's Sky, which I heard from Star Citizen which I heard from some random video link on youtube. No clue that EVE even existed until about 3 months ago, thus I didn't bother to look up any info about it, it has a free 30 day trial which all MMO's should have, and I gave it a shot as my first space MMO.

That being said, it would have been nice to know that every single player I am passing by, can shoot me if they want to, destroy my ship, and steal whatever I had on/in my ship before I decided to blow $20 on a PLEX to buy myself some implants, skill books, modules, and a variety of other things that I decided to transport to a system I called home for my upcoming solo mining operation in hisec.... it never made it there. I nearly put the game down and never touched it again, and filed a complaint with my bank to get my $20 back as I had felt ripped off. However, the kind soul that decided to destroy my upwards of 800 million worth of stuff, messaged and said he was sorry, and didn't realize I was such a new player, and he gave me the ISK to replace my ship, and all that was lost, gave me a few links with information about hauling, and how to properly fit a ship for such an adventure.

I thought, well if everyone in EVE is this nice, this could be a great game, after all I am coming off of World of Warcraft which happens to have one of the worst most disrespectful communities in gaming today. It didn't take long for that feeling to turn around when I was approached by a member from a particular alliance/Corp that I choose not to use the name of, asking for my permit while I was mining in my Venture in a .8 system, luckily for me, I've heard about these douchebags, and unlucky for them, I had the privilege of meeting one of the original founders of that particular Corporation... as she was giving me mining boosts from an Orca she had stolen several years back from a Corp, and advice. So I knew all about their scams, self destructed and docked my pod as soon as he started to attack, good try scum, went back and looted his ship which just so happened to pay for 3 more of the same ship I self destructed, lol starting to see their stupidity.

So I spent the next month or so mining in relative peace in a fairly empty system, training skills, getting in a barge, and even opening a second account to haul my ore back to dock so I didn't have to leave the belt every time my ore hold was full. Which eventually turned in 5 accounts, mostly miners. So about a month ago, I started to look for a Corporation that would provide mining boosts among other services, such as higher reprocessing, better manufacturing and so on. I have put up many many posts about wanting to join a Corporation. I didn't ask for much, but that's not what the Corporations wanted, they pretty much want your soul, not much different from the Corporations in America today. After almost a month of searching for a Corp, I found one that almost didn't require me to sign a contract with Satin himself.

I finally caved and just said screw it, these people want so much, let's see how far we have to go. It took more than 24 hours of talking with someone to finally be agreed to join the Corp...AFTER I go sign up for Mumble, Pidgin, download those and TeamSpeak, get verified by voice that I'm not a child, or someone they've heard before, go to their forum, sign up there, go to a wiki that doesn't work on Internet Explorer (which I happen to like), which means I also have to download a new browser, Then I have to submit an API key that gives every single bit of information about my account aside from my login information ( so they say) which I find to be extremely invasive as a new player. I get why you're so cautious, you have SO many pixels and binary and hex code at risk, you don't want to trust anyone....

SO here I am, in my new Corp, excited I might get to finally do some group activities like Raids in WoW, or WvW in Guild Wars 2, despite the fact that the Corp I joined only has 36 members, it's actually part of a massive alliance consisting of more than 3000 players... who all ignore me when asking the 500+ in alliance chat if there is a fleet I can join so we can go do whatever an alliance does. I ask in Corp chat.. turns out, no one is on, and when there is, it's the same 2 or 3 people. So here I am, stuck 27+ jumps into Red security space, with not nearly enough skill points in combat skills to do much on my own, without a clue what to do, and no one to do it with... I think I finally understand why there is so much ganking going on in hisec, you people are bored as ****, so you do the only fun thing there is... maybe.... I wouldn't know, and that's kill other players.

Well, I suppose I will just make my way back to hisec and go back to the asteroid belts, it's better than sitting in dock, waiting for more Corp members to get on and yelling in alliance chat for a fleet to join. So much for being an MMO.

PLEASE NOTE:
These events did not happen on THIS character, nor are these event's associated with this account. This "short story" was written by a friend and submitted by me to protect her identity in case she keeps playing, and I have agreed to post this on her behalf.

Yea, I learned as a new player its worthless to try and go to 0.0. Like, "they" will try to tell you that it's viable, but really there's so little you can do on your own there, everything is dependent on others which means you sit around alot waiting for someone to do something you're capable of participating in.

Sometimes I'd be allowed to tag along on "ratting" and plexes, but since I was so small I felt like my being there, receiving a portion of the bounties was stealing compared to how little contribution I was making. Even going ospreys throwing cap.

And what's up with you not wanting to sign a deal with Satin? You a silk guy? Go Cotton or go home?

But the game did give her enough incentive to want to write an essay on her feelings about it. The game's had an impact. There were a couple bad choices, but everyone will make them.
A failure only becomes permanent if it causes you to give up.

I am not even sure where to begin. But it does sound like the game is not going to be very fun for you if you are not a fan of PvP.

So your friend uses internet explorer and complains about stuff not working on it...

Imo you lose nubie status long before you end up multiboxing 5 accounts.

And this place has been infamous for over a decade for being harsh, literally any amount of effort in research would have turned this up.

What's this have to do with EVE Online, the game, rather than whichever corp it was that was apparently inactive?

Pretty much just a rant by someone not wanting to accept blame for not doing any kind of research on the game.

I have no sympathy if that is what the person is after.

The player is responsible to make necessary effort in learning what a game is about before spending money upon it.

I know how you feel and it does suck, look for a casual highsec corporation, it can take some searching but I found one in my newbie days, we had a ******* blast doing things. Exploring, we used to assign a person to each individual can from the loot spew but that's changed now. I used to logi harder sites as they flew around in navy slicers, dealing with awoxers and just knocking around for fun. There a channels you can find in your neocom on the left in the social tab, top button. There should also be a corporation search tool you can use to find corps, then check their ad's and try contacting people listed in those ad's, if it looks dead try another. The search tool also has filters, and the recruitment channels are in each language of other players looking for members.

TL;DR find people who like to fart around in exploration and groups, go look around a wormhole with some friends, see what you can scoop like roids or gas, or maybe an abandoned tractor unit, i've found two of those.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

Most amazing thing is he has been a game for 20 years and never heard of EVE-Online.

BTW just being in a corp/alliance doesn't mean anything. Plenty of crappy, too small, bad ones out there.

Move/change if you need too.

Been around since the beginning.

Lol Wow OP - Im such a new player, I only have 1 account - I don't think any COMPLETELY new players will have multiple accounts and if they do , the are not new players and would certainly know the game is quite hostile.

Since you claim you "had the privilege of meeting one of the original founders of that particular Corporation" we all know is CODE affiliated, why not ask "her" if you could join "her" non ganking alts corporation ?

Many still play the game , you just chose a corp that doesn't - Now that your accustomed to EVERY Eve corps newbro recruitment practices , you wont take their intrusiveness so personally Big smile.

2 things from this... 1. EVE / CCP does need to advertise better. I wonder if they think the players go door to door like Mormon Missionaries to preach about EVE, and so don't worry about effective marketing? The word of mouth for EVE isn't much.

2. Code vs Ventures? Really? That's all they have left? How soon before they have to compete for the privilege of ganking a mining velator? EDIT: I'd heard about Code going after Ventures from other channels as well.

I'm sorry your experience was so bad.. But if you had spent the same ammount of time it took me to read that wall if text you wrote, on google, you would have known what your getting yourself into.. And being new and buying a plex is the worst thing you can do. Ruins a lot of perspective and makes you even more angry when you loose it all.

Why are you annoying people in ally/corp chat for fleets when you can use the fleet finder? Sounding like a broken record here but sounds like OP shoulda studied up some more.

Hey there,

Sorry to see you've been having such a hard time. As others have suggested, look for another corporation that is more active, more personable. Using a search engine on there corporation can give you a lot of information them, more then one would think. Use this to gauge whether or not this is something you may want to look into, or move on too another corporation. Here is a link too a Thread that you may find useful.

On another note, API keys DO NOT, and WILL NOT EVER give away personal Account, Financial or Account information. It is Character specific, and when creating an account, you are given a list of access that that key can give. YOU Choose what they have access to. You can delete keys at any time, as well as check key activity to see who looked at what, when and the IP it came from.

Hope this helps!

Eve is a sandbox and your bad experiences are a result of your failing to understand the freedom it provides. You come from WoW, where you are told how to play and there is little room for creativity or imagination. There are only optimal gearing options and correct mechanics, even in PVP. Eve is not like that.

Eve is your game and you can do whatever you want with it. You're treating it as a game where you have to follow a proper path of progression, trying to reach the end game in an orderly fashion and getting annoyed because other players can interfere with your progress. That's not how the game is played. The other players are the raid bosses and there are no set mechanics for dealing with them. The organization who charged you for a permit were not trying to extort money from you for profit, they were trying to teach you how to play. Try to see things from a more open-minded perspective.

Interesting post.

Some advice:

- You can in fact mine in "red security" space
- The "redder" the space, the faster you need to be. Stuff like TS etc help in that regard
- Ship PvP is entirely avoidable. You do have to state that by avoiding it, you're not doing it. Since that's debatable, you can reap some tears from simpletons who disagree with that. Meaning you just successfully PvP-ed. Just not with your ship :)
- If you get bored with a corp, leave
- People differ. You don't like the people you play with now, find others
- I despise CODE myself for the simple reason they're H-sec dwellers. I also don't like extortion-rackets anywhere. I happen to be a "nice" guy (if somewhat demanding). In EVE that's a good thing for both me and CODE. It generates content. A story. In the end both them and me are building different castles in the sandbox for different reasons. You don't like their castle?; ignore it or blow it up.

If we dive into the details:

Miner, multiple mining accounts, doesn't want CODE interfering, prefers not to PvP

Use those parameters to look for a niche in EVE that provides the ability to play that way. The current one doesn't cut it. I think "red space" can offer most things easily except the last. That one needs a bit of smart looking. I'd say go Bovril miners (Brave mining group). There may be others tho.

To finish it off: You'll make mistakes. Then you die or get robbed or scammed etc. That's why EVE rules. Hard. What you do matters. You're never truly alone!

So lets get back in there shall we?
