I've tried a few times to find the right balance between tax/convenience.

  • I tried living away from Jita in an industrial friendly area, away from gankers, but it was a pain to go and get components from Jita to build T2. And had to ship to mains in nullsec.

  • I lived near Jita, but rent was high, and so were taxes, gankers active in Uedema and Niarja, so no afk through there.

  • I tried to live near my nullsec mains, so I could build locally, but I couldn't mine afk.

What do you think the best balance is? Any tips?

Look at other market hubs. There are at least 4 others that carry materials for T2 production and rent near them is much cheaper.

Also, if you shift your way of thinking about them you'll open up possibilities. You'll still sometimes head to Jita to buy some raw materials but you can head to other hubs like Amarr without adding much travel.

And never AFK!

I'm on all the time, just semi-afk while I work. Thanks for an answer.

I was thinking of moving near a trade hub and putting up Jita priced buy and sell orders to stimulate the local hub, and hopefully creating a market for T2 materials (even if i lose some isk in the process). the thinking is if there is fair prices people might dump the stuff there instead of hauling to jita.

use redfrog/ push for your hauling or if inter-hub hauling public contracts are cheaper

I think it's better to be close to where you sell so you better understand the market. The moon materials are just easier sourced in Jita so maybe you should sink some isk in more inventory and bring in a big batch periodically. It's good to buy on the lows anyway.
