I've been in game for about six weeks and my first hour, I had the same worries as you.

The Opportunities chart is not really a tutorial. Treat it more like a checklist that updates itself.

Your best bet now is to fly to a station and press F12 to bring up a list of Career Agents. If you need to, fly to the station where they are based, and choose one of the careers that might interest you (you can do all of the choices, and it's best to cover them all). This will be much more informative and you'll find that as you go, the Opportunities will fill themselves in. You'll make some ISK, get some skill books, and get some ships.

Also the Opportunities chart does not complete for some tasks even when you've done them. If I recall, I could never get the Camera move to complete, which at first freaked me out as I thought I was doing something wrong.

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

Hi there new player.

Couple of things worth mentioning.

Eve is an open world PvP sandbox, this means you can affectivly violanced out of your space ship anywhere , even in highsec

Endeavour not to compare eve to wow, we don't like it when people do this and it's a quick way to get yourself targeted.

Stuff like Scamming, extortion, ransoming and theft are considered legitimate gameplay here so be aware of this when dealing with people.

Now for the first while you shouldn't worry about any of that.

Day one advice usually goes, do the tutorials, then look for the sisters of eve epic arc.

Chat with people in local, make friends as you go.

Welcome to eve

Let me explain this game in a weird, but accurate way.

Don't attempt "the grind". When you find a guy who tells you to run missions and skill for a battleship to run lvl4s and make money, then insult his mother, father, lack of sexual organs and post his name on the forums so we can take him and dump him into the next trashcan.

Don't attempt "the grind". People who suggest you to mine solo to make isk (mine with me instead, it's fun) are griefers denying you the actual experiences the game has to offer. If you come across such a person, then insult his mother, father, tell him he should have been born a worm and post his name on the forums so we can trash him endlessly.

Answer to your question.
If there was a specific system you were supposed to jump to the gates you need to go through to get there would have been marked in yellow in your overview. If there is nothing marked in yellow then you are doing OK.

Ignore ALL of this, since we have no idea what you want to do, or will end up doing in this game this is bad advice.

Best advice we can give you is go forth and run ALL of the tutorial missions. Reasons, free stuff, ISK and exposure to many of the things there are to do in this game and from that YOU can decide what you want to do instead of someone here telling you what you should do or not do.

Mining is still a decent way for new / low skilled players to make ISK. Some even find it to be an enjoyable way to pass time in this game and have been happily doing it longer than I have been in this game.

Missions are an excellent way to earn some ISK as well, and in their own way they offer some unique opportunities to explore what various ship fits can do. Like mining there are players I know that have been running missions since before I joined and they still find ways to make them challenging and fun.

So now we get around to the PvP thingy that most will try to push you into. PvP defined as shooting other players stuff and making it blow up, or getting blown up in the process. Great fun for many in the game and this is the focus of this game but it is by no means the only thing you can do that is fun and exciting despite what all the PvP players will tell you.
My only advice on PvP is this, never PvP in your ONLY ship. Make sure that you always have at least one ship somewhere reasonably safe that you can use to make ISK. Unfortunately I have seen to many new players ignore this and end up with nothng to fly but the rookie ship the game give you for free and those are not well suited to making ISK.

Welcome to EvE, run the tutorials, explore around and see what there is to do, find what YOIU like and then have fun.

You hear a lot about the "don't fly it if you care about losing it" principle, but the REAL first rule of Eve and the key to the game is this:

RIGHT CLICK ON IT.

Is there a thing you haven't seen before? Right click on it.

Is there a thing you _have_ seen? Right click on it.

Is there nothing? Right click on the empty space.

Basically Eve is just a giant context pop-up menu.

If this seems like a random answer to your specific question, I bring this up because one of the options you'll get if you right-click on the nothing while floating in empty space is a list of stargates and a nested 'warp to' option. One of those will be where you were supposed to go. It should also be the yellow one in your overview, but you might as well start practicing that right-clicking now.

If you don't have any yellow gates in your overview/in space, three guesses what you do to your destination to get your autopilot to set the route markers up for you. Hint: it doesn't involve the left-mouse button, initially.

in general opportunities are more an achievement system then actual tutorial and as stated earlier in this thread hit F12 and look for career agents who give you your actual tutorial missions.

You can also check from achievement tree what steps are required from you to do to complete the opportunity.

Glad I could make your day a little brighter and fil at least part of it with some humor.

Now grow up and when you give advice on an open ended question asked by a player you know nothing about be a little more careful in your answers. I know that it is very hard for you "elite" PvP(shoot other players definition) folks to even admit that there may be other reasons to play this game, but try anyway it really does best serve the new players to cover all possibilities. And like the ages old adage if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all.

And NO I do not have any problem with you expressing a preference for PvP, or a dislike of mining, missions etc, but to tell a new player "Don't Attempt" missions and mining etc is a dis-service to them and to the game and we do not need that type of crap.

You might want to re-read the post you took exception too.

Angelica's advice was very good and did not tell any new players '"Don't Attempt" missions and mining etc'. The phrase used numerous times was 'Don't attempt "the grind". ' which is good advice.

Eve is one of the few MMO's that doesn't require you to grind to advance in the game. Pointing that out to our wondeful new players is one of the best bits of early advice they can get.

When you set a route, the next star gate will be highlighted in yellow on your overview. Is it possible you did not set a route (right click a system -> set destination), or jumped through a different gate instead? Since they are new I have not done the "opportunities" myself so I don't know the details of what it asks you to do. It's entirely possible there is a bug.

"New Eden" is the name of the galaxy we are in and is also the name of a system in the Genesis region (which was where the wormhole from Earth originally opened up and eventually collapsed in the lore). IMO it's unlikely that the opportunity was asking you to go to that system. It's probably just referring to the name of the galaxy.

And the word "grind"or the phrase "to grind" is often used to describe mission running, ratting, part of the process to rebuild standings and many other things in this game and without explanation of her / his intent it leaves many things open to interpretation, things that a new player may or may not understand or even know about.

Angelica Dreamstar wrote:
"Don't attempt "the grind". "

With just this limited amount of information sniped from the post as you did I might be inclined to agree with you., but even then telling new players simply not to attempt the grind without further information is bad advice.
We "grind" for positive standings to gain the benefits from those standings.
We "grind" to repair our standings so we can go back into high sec or portions of high sec without the risk of having every player as well as the faction police chasing our asses.
And there are many other positive things in this game that one has to "grind" for.
So in this way Angellica is still doing this and all new players a dis-service by telling them to stay away from something that for good or bad is an integral part of the game.

When taken as whole this paragraph from the post I commented on has a very clear meaning.
Do not grind missions and anyone that tells you to do so needs to be dumped into a trashcan.

Again taken as a whole the meaning is clear as well, anyone that tells you to mine should be ridiculed and trashed endlessly here on the forums.

The meanings in these is very clear and it has no place here as an answer to a questions asked by a new player, at least not in the form she/he posted it in.

In the end this all comes back to clearly and concisely communicating your point especially with new players and that is something that all of us veteran players are really bad at from time to time. We all use terms and abbreviations that are common in the game, things that a new player may or may not know about.

Whilst your initial post was on point it might be an idea to drop this here.
I enjoy a good comment engineered to wind someone up (and it will no doubt land) but it's a tad antagonistic for new citizens q&a.
