Okay. I'll bite.

They don't, outside of the standard risk everyone faces of possible attack at any time while undocked.

However, once deployed, a MTU can be shot by another player. This causes them to be flagged as a suspect and be allows them to be freely engaged by anyone for the duration of the suspect timer.
People will occasionally freak out at this time because someone is going all Bruce Leeroy on their shopping cart and open fire on them.
At this point it's not really random anymore, as the person who owns the MTU is actually the aggressor and has deliberately started a fight. A limited engagement is generated and the defender may now well, defend themselves.

Hope that answers your question.

The drone bug was fixed some time ago unless a recent patch broke it again (we can only hope). So long as you completely ignore the guy shooting your MTU and even scoop it they will get bored after killing it and move on eventually. Most have a hard and fast rule of no more then 5-10 mins per player to maximize chances that somebody will shoot them Lol. Well most people who I have rubbed shoulders with who do this.

And hey, feel free to shoot them if you want. I'm sure they'll be super happy to shoot back.
Just keep in mind that for the duration of their suspect timer ANYONE can engage them... meaning you can invite friends to the party, but they have a much more difficult time gathering help.

if i have a mtu out, and someone comes in and drops a can, will it scoop and loot, making me criminal?

or if they self destruct a cheap ship, and mtu scoops and loots, do i became criminal to them, corp, everyone?

No. Your MTU will not touch anything yellow as far as I'm aware. It will scoop things that belong to you and things that are marked as available to all.

I find it practically impossible to not shoot an MTU. The goal, of course, is to get the mission runner to defend it, giving you a limited engagement. Same thing with looting wrecks. When hunting for highsec fights the most frustrating thing is when the mission runner abandons all wrecks. I have decided it is actually cheating.

Well... if they don't have a permit, then we gank them.
I don't know why you think an MTU makes you automatically immune?

A ship orbiting an MTU is a beacon to me. If you aren't displaying the proper permit on your ship then your MTU will be shot. Really, though, a mobile tractor unit is the embodiment of bot-aspirancy. How much more automated do bots need missions to be?

I'm just doing my bit to increase loot and salvage value for mission runners. The Noctis and MTU did such bad things to mission runner isk per hour.

For best results never don't shoot the 'Magpie' MTU's.
Those silly things cost as much as some battleships and generate soooo much content when they go boom.
Disclaimer: As prices vary the above statement may become more or less true on the first part, yet the second part should remain constant. Your mileage may vary.

Last time I bagged one I got an official fan club. It made me feel special for a minute.
Of course, then I realized that I'm still terrible at this game and no number of people being worse at it than me is going to change that. That made me sad again.
