For new bros - Getting rid of the New Map for exploration

As new bros, you may not know that there is an older version of the map that is available for exploration and general traveling around. It seems pretty much considered general opinion now, that the older map is vastly superior when it comes to exploration. In my opinion, while the old map doesnt look as nice it is way more functional and easier to use for just about everything.

So as a new bro, if you want to use the old map (and using the old map is a sure sign of saltiness), click "esc" then click the "general settings" tab, then look for the "experimental features" section on the lower left. Uncheck the "try new map" box, and you are good to go.

You can also try turning off the display of the probe bracket using the options at the top left of the new map. The probes themselves still display their scan areas, but they no longer have a clickable icon, which tends to get in the way of things.

Also highly recommended to scan with the new map in full-screen.

The old map is much more intuitive and useful then the new. I tell all the newbess that ask about exploration to turn it off perma.

It's almost as if the new map is made by someone who doesn't actually actively play EVE... That happens a lot: things that look great and make good sense if all you do is sit still and suck on an asteroid but are utterly useless if you do stuff like, say, PVP.

Even just for normal probing. I tried using it to probe down a few sigs at home and was shocked at how unbelievably unusable the thing was. That godawful inertia when you zoom in and out is just one thing. So yeah, +1 for the PSA, newbies deserve better.

It functions.

I'm only semi kidding. While, you CAN you use the new map, it is very clearly unfinished. While the old map is by no means perfect and could use with some updates, the fact is it is far more user friendly, especially when it comes to probing. The new I believe has a circle for a cursor, which makes grabbing probes difficult, there is as I mentioned earlier an extremely aggravating 'inertia' when you zoom in an out making any kind of precision work extremely frustrating and take twice as long at a minimum. I do like that it doesn't have to be used in full screen, but that alone doesn't matter when anything I need to use the map for can be done far more quickly using the old one. There's also the fact that it just doesn't 'run' smoothly, granted my compute blows, but the old map works extremely well even then.

Not sure if it's been updated at all since I last tried but if it's anything like it was a month or two ago it's got a hell of a lot of room for improvement. I, and others are worried they replace the old one with this new one before it even reaches parity with the old. Common consensus is "It's pretty, but a pain to use."

Grrr.

So, probing - which I have no clue what it is ^^' - and the circle cursor ?
The cursor would definitely be better with a reticule or a simple cross, or the old model.

As for the inertia, I don't know if it changed since last time you used it but I don't see any kind of inertia going on, and the map runs smoothly for me so that's not a problem (for me).

So far this doesn't seem like anything important.

However ! From my own modest observations, what the new map appears to be lacking in is zoom depth : you seem to be able to zoom 2-5x more in the old map which makes for an amalgamation of dots/destinations on the new map, having to scroll between up to 30 destinations to find yours.
(maybe this is why it's harder for probing, whatever that is)

I'm just curious because I'd rather take good habits right off the bat than getting used to something flawed, this is also why I want to know exactly what is wrong with the new map and why/how it makes it less efficient (understanding things is key to mastering them ^^) Just want to make sure it's not a "hard time getting used to the a design" case (since everyone seems to agree, it's probably not) and that the new map does indeed prevent optimal gameplay.

The thing about the new map is that it was designed by someone who has little idea of what makes a map good. A good map is one where you can look at it and get the information you need at a glance or at least with little effort. Here, the dev responsible for the new map was probably tinkering with google earth one day zooming in and out, in total awe that he could see his house in one view and then the whole world in another. He probably said to himself, "wouldnt it be neat if the eve map was like google earth? We could zoom in or out and see our selves - neato!" What he forgot is that google earth is a toy that you play with from your desktop, while you are sitting around with nothing much else going on. It is not something that you use while driving down the highway at 60mph. No one has google earth as a gps, because when you are driving you need critical information with minimal distraction. The new map like google earth is fine when you are sitting still with nothing else much going on, but as soon as you start moving, jumping from system to system, or trying to find or evade hostile players within a system, there is too much tinkering required, too much distraction to make the new map useful.

Ok that good and all, but no one here can tell me WHY things are easier with the old map ?
Right now all I've been reading are feelings and general directions, not arguments and examples, hence why -as a new player- I still have no clue why the old map would benefit me more.
As I've said the only noteworthy problem I've seen is the lack of zoom depth - which while very problematic should be easy to solve. So is that all there is ? That you don't have a focused vision on yourself and a clear vision of your close(ish) surroundings ? Or is there more to it that I can't yet comprehend ?
All I'm saying is "use the old map, it's better" doesn't help me nor convince me. Also I'm curious ^^

Well in any case I'm going to head out to see on other parts of forum since it seems to be a valid concern I'll probably find more detailed thread ! Thanks for the answers :)

Thanks a lot for the links, so as I understand it, this is not a design problem but more bugs/fixes/tweaks issue. So with a little hope in the foreseeable future it should get better once they get around to doing it, it's still in beta after all.
I'll give the old map a try since it seems I might be missing on a few things/give myself a harder time but as a new player the old map doesn't seem appealing whatsoever -both the outdated graphics and having to swap window when you want to zoom in closer.

Can agree, new map suffers heavily from cursor, inertia, celesital-icons being dumb and obstrusive, and the move-marker you drag around to reposition your probes being absurdly tiny. Forced myself to use the new map in anticipation of CCP removing the old one, not been a smart choice regarding nerves tho.

I honestly don't see the problem with the new map. I explore a lot and have never noticed any trouble with inertia or the cursor or whatever, and yes I do explore a lot. It's possible it behaves differently for some of course if it's bugged.

I'm pretty happy with it though, it's easier to look up system statistics as well (ie. pods killed). I'm pretty sure most new players who aren't used to the old map already will find the new one a lot more intuitive.

Rather than change setting I pull up the old map for probing using F10. I also use the new map in a small docked window when I'm flying around in space.

My main problem with the old map is that it doesn't have right click access in space to system bookmarks.

Err yes I remember the first time I tried to use probes after the new map was put in, I immediately fled to the nearest chat channel to figure out how to make it go away.

The new map is pretty but trying to use it for scanning gave me an instant headache.

Do you actually use scan probes?
