d-scanning in a wormhole......will I still see a ship on d-scan in a data site or gas site even if the site has not been scanned out yet or does the site need to be scanned first in order to pick up the ships? Im talking scanning only. I know in order to warp to the ship and the site it needs to be scanned first.

I know nothing about sites etc.

One rookie mistake with dscan that happens a lot is that people dont understand where 0 degrees is.

To do a 5 degree scan of the sun for example, the sun mush be directly behind your ship from the perspective of your screen. Lots of people assume that to do a 5 degree scan your ship must be pointing in that direction (i know i did originally). This is not the case.

Whatever you want to narrow scan must be behind your ship regardless of how your ship is oriented, only the camera position matters.

I know how to scan and use the d-scanner.....pretty well. If your hiding at a planet with 100 moons I will find you......no question about it.

My question is / was............in a WH will your d-scanner pick up ships in data/relic/gass/ore/combat sites EVEN if you have yet to probe the sites down yet.

Dscan should pick up any ships withing 14.3 AU's of your ship regardless of whether or not they are in combat sites or not. Combat recons need not apply.

Depends on the ship. Combat Recons do not show on d-scan. Also depends if you are within d-scan range of the anom. All anoms spawn within 10au of a planet. Find the nearest planet to that anom and warp to it, then run a d-scan.

So a Heron will still show up on D-Scan if he is running a data site for example but I will have to probe the site down and warp there to actually see him.......or kill him. Cool

Thats what i gather from the replies.

I just dont want to waste time probing down sites if no one is present on D-Scan

No, you can combat probe him also; but regardless, you will have to probe him or the site down.

d-scan results are unrelated to probing.

That said, what you really want to do (assuming you don't have system pre-scanned) is:
- deploy the probes when you don't see him on the d-scan, then move them outside the system (more than 14au),
- narrow him down to within 5 degrees and narrow the distance to within 1au,
- center the probes on probable location; take your time he wont see the probes until you scan,
- scan and immediately move the probes outside the system; center on the sig again, if you didn't get 100% at the first pass.

This way you stand chances to not spook him out. Also, combat probes are bad in j-space. They will spook everyone out, whereas core probes are sometimes ignored. Everything interesting take place in sigs/anoms/moons anyway.

The only time you will never see the said Heron on Dscan is if the data site is >14.3 AU's away from your ship. To see said heron get closer to the data site. Check the system map for nearby celestials.
