5 month old char.

skills optimizing around producing and selling

planning to stick to T1 production for now.

In general, should I buy a virgin BPO and research it myself or buy it fully improved?

Check out research time and compute a rough estimate of your return on investment (henceforce ROI) if you purchase the researched BPO. Many of the low end t1 prints can be easily researched to functional levels. Others will be very time consuming, or at least time consuming enough that you'd consider the purchase worth it since otherwise you could have idle production instead of profitable goods. The ROI on researched prints isn't always worth it though, so bear in mind that you will need to crack open a speadsheet to do the math yourself. Several tools exist to make the job easier (i'll leave you to goolge them since I don't advertise for free), but ultimately you want your own sketch.

Also realize that some items are not currently profitable to build because CCP increased mineral usage.

Old products were built with less minerals thus are cheaper then your new product will be.

Most ammo, module & rig BPO's can be fully researched in a few weeks with reasonable skills. Ships take longer but it's questionable whether you can make a profit there as a new player.

Another trick is to research 8 levels, make some copies and then research the remaining levels while building from the copies.

For T1 stuff that is profitable look at mobile depots, MTU's and rigs. May be others but I made a lot of ISK building those. Be aware that there is a market cycle and the price will swing from very profitable to below cost. Establish your floor price and stick to it - wait for the market to come to you.

Once you start making T2 you don't need researched prints - unless you will also be making the T1 inputs. ME/TE of the T1 print has no influence on the ME/TE of the invented T2 print.

For me personally, I tend to look at co tracts for BPOs already researched just because I already have so many and I like all my BPOs researched. But for just starting out I would look at the cost difference, most of the cheaper bpos take little time to actually research and would be cheaper for you to just do it yourself.

It really depends on several factors. How expensive is the blueprint, how long does the research take, how much more would a researched BPO in the contract pages cost?
For low cost BPOs like ammo, drones, frigates and, in general, high volume items, a contract could be the better approach if you can cover the extra ISK within a short time.
For more expensive BPOs that take longer time to research TE and ME to an acceptable level, doing that yourself can be worth it, if you can afford to lock that BPO up for weeks or even months. That's where imho planning ahead, market research and running the numbers of production costs vs. market value come into play.
I usually ask myself, what would I like to build in the near future, with a nice profit and currently as little effort as possible. So I plan my skill training accordingly, and usually purchase the BPOs from NPCs and do the research completely myself or buy partially researched BPOs and do only some research.

And then there is still the option to purchase BPCs. There's a market for that too, you can dip a toe into a certain product, see if it works out without spending millions and later decide whether to get that BPO.

I always advocate buying researched BPO's from contracts, they will (eventually) pay for themselves on a long enough time scale. Just add 1% to the total cost per run to work out how much its paid off.
Let someone else do the research on it.

@Kestral,

This is helpful and makes intuitive sense. Especially on such a new char, I have few of the skills which optimize for research.
