Hello,
Could anyone please explain the basics of what is what regarding the items button, the assets and the hanger? Is the assets button everything owned everywhere? How about the items button? Is that just at that station? Are all items kept in ships cargo holds pending fitting or is there a "bank"of items I pick from when fitting?
cheers

Assets - Anything anywhere that you own.

Items - stuff you have in your hangar in the station you are currently at. Does not count stuff in the cargo of any ships. This is also where the stuff you buy goes. You can fit from either here or your cargohold, but generally you're going to be fitting from your item hangar.

So I imagine most people keep the majority of their stuff in their hanger (items) rather than in cargo holds of ships?

Yes. Ship cargoes aren't usually big enough to hold much, and you don't want to run the risk of losing more than you need to if your ship is lost. Leave all non-essentials in the item hangar unless you're moving to a new area and taking it all with you.

Yes -

Also here is a more basic lay out of all the things you own in eve.

Assets - everything you own
Items - the things that you have in the station that you are docked in at the time
Ships - the ships that you own docked in that station and the current ship your in
Also - if you have items in the cargoholds of ships in a station you aren't docked at,
you won't see those items automatically unless you right-click the ship and pick "view contents"

It is a very good idea to take only what you need in your cargohold of your ship. So if by chance you lose that ship, you
don't lose a large part of your assets.

As this game has what is called "full loot" in the MMO-industry you definetly don't want to be carrying extra stuff to be scooped by the who shot you, when you blow up.
So people keep their stuff in station hangars and risk losing them only when they have to "relocate" to some other parts of EVE.
These poorly fitted badgers are also known as "moving trucks" which you can distinguish from the KM's by having every which way of odds and end from zephyrs to janitors and Quafe.
Funny part is that often these "priced possessions" are no more worth then few 10s of millions of ISK but the rage of losing those if often a sight to see.
My rage part was when someone failed purposefully my courier cargo and stole my budding corpse collection, along with some mighty useless junk (which is why I didn't bother to put large enough collateral). Evil

So after that story remember to keep an eye out when you move your things in EVE and GL.
