Idea for new Item - Radar Ghosting

I was reading the Honor Harrington series of books (great books by the way for all space geeks)

and one thing they used to great effect was a EM Drone which changes the radar signature of a given ship.

I was thinking maybe a low/med slot where whilst docked in station you could change what other overlays saw you as. So a Frigate could set themselves on overlay to show up as a battleship.

Skills.
There would be a skill called Radar Ghosting (something like that) and 1 skill level allows you to change the class of your ship by 1. So a frigate could go to Destroyer, destroyer to cruiser etc. At level 5 it would allow a ship to be + or - 5 levels of their active ship.

2 variations of the mod itself
with the tech1 version limiting you to a maximum of 3 levels, and the tech2 version up to the maximum 5. Perhaps even cross faction ships are available in the tech2 version only, so a caldari frigate could show up as a Amarr battleship

Why add this into the game?

Well i thought it would add an interesting meta game into fleet combat, with actual spotters "Looking" to see if the ships are what they say they are, so in overlay they would be showing up as a Frigate but when someone actually looks at the ship you can see it is actually a Cruiser-Logi, adding another level of complexity into callouts for target acquisition.

Thoughts comments suggestions appreciated

Much as I love Honor Harrington (I have my tRMN membership card around here somewhere) this is an idea which does not fit the flavor of eve.

Forcing people to 'look at' each ship will be horrible for large fights. So allowing one ship to appear as another on the overview is a flat out no.

Allowing a ship to appear as something else on D-scan or probes would be better but i still prefer the idea where a mobile structure can be deployed and made to appear as a ship on D-scan and probes.

Its neater than ships appearing as something else, simple and, with a good instinct, detectable. A deployable also couldnt be used to offensively attack someone. You have to set a trap instead.

edit- oh and making it a deployable means the SP's are irrelevant, even noobs can do it, and you dont have to gimp your fit...unless you're cloaked.

Do you mean the overview or the ship model appearance?

I'm not sure it matters.

Has been suggested before, and has been shot down as overall bad for the game.

I meant in Overview it would be listed and the icon be the same as whatever ship they "Ghosted" as.

Ship model appearance would be what they "Actually are", so by quickly looking at the ship you could identify it for what it is.

I think it could create a new role in fleets where callouts are not done purely on overview but first have to be "Viewed"

If its been suggested before sorry, I did try searching but I guess its generic terms.

If it was reasonable to try to play the game entirely without the overview, I might be more sympathetic, but it is much easier to play entirely from overview than from visual, and so many players (like myself) barely see space. As such, it does not fit the flavor or standard usage of how the game is played.
