Have i missed something, but arent the 1400mm artys, Tachyons and 425mm rails just identical?

Habit, probably.

Though if you really want compression for trit, I'd suggest 800mm Repeating Artillery I instead.
While you might need double the number of them (as they're 25m3 each, rather than 50m3), you get about a quarter more trit per m3. You'll also get substantially more Mex. The only one that's lower is the Megacyte.

For each individual mineral type, discounting the others:

Hey guys I often wondered. if your making the guns, there is no sense in compressing them for less minerals is there?

No I havnt worked with blueprints but ofter wondered.

Thanks,

Hung

800mm Repeating Artillery I - 25m3, 65000 Tritanium, for a ratio of 2500 trit per m3.
Tritanium - Ratio of 100 trit per m3
Regular veld - 1000 trit per 33.3m3 for a ratio of 30 trit per m3
Compressed veldspar - 50,000 trit per 413m3, for a ratio of 121 trit per m3

For the best:
Metal Scraps - 500 trit per 0.01 m3 - Ratio of 50,000 trit per m3

If you throw in other mineral types, the compression ration just gets better.

So are you making them then complressing them? or are you buying the guns then compressing?

Making the guns compresses the materials used into a smaller space. That way it's easier to transport to build location where you can uncompress them using the repro plant.

Compress means use minerals to make an item...the item is smaller than the parts(minerals needed to make it) so it is compressed.

Haul items made to location to build...and refine them(decompress) them back to minerals...slight mineral loss, but MANY MANY less trips than hauling it as minerals.

so a railgun is compressed because it is an item not minerals that takes up less space than the minerals would that are needed to make it.

compression ratio of 20:1 means you can haul 20 freighter loads of minerals...or make the items and haul 1 load of items instead and refine that when you get there and get probably 19.98 freighter loads of minerals when you refine the items. Its worth the loss to save the time hauling.

This is most commonly used for transporting lots of trit from empire to 0.0 for building ships there.
