*FEATURE IDEA*

HISTORICAL TESTIMONIAL OF EVE ONLINE
by Leela Sirene

The origin of this idea comes from my post in the “Give me the little things” thread in the General Discussion Forums

*When having selected a solar system on the star map I've already been before, why not letting me zoom in into the solar system map.*

This feature could easily be connected to the Fiction Portal or the EVELOPEDIA, the Epic Arc Missions and of course “Faction Warfare”. The idea is that people venture out into the deep space of HiSec, LowSec and NullSec in order to collect information regarding the history and lore of EVE Online. The information provided by using the exploration tools of EVE should be regarding both, player made and fictional History of EVE. In the following I would like to give you a picture of what I mean and hopefully it will find a few of you who are going to support it.

The idea behind the idea

We’ve been told that 49% of all of us players are residing in High Security Space. Most of them have most likely little or no incentive to leave their cozy environment. What we also know is that war drives the economy in EVE Online. If a ship gets destroyed ore must be mined, blueprints must be researched and the ship must be rebuilt and sold.

But if 49% of us are sitting in High Security Space with just losing a ship on and off the economy is working just about half it’s potential. Despite that those 49% of us are missing most of the fun it creates to do the more risky things. So why not giving them and of course everyone else another little incentive to do drive the economy a bit more and maybe find the fun in the game.

This feature is for everyone: Carebear, PvP’er, Ganker, Griefer , Sov Holder and so on. But this feature can do just a bit more than that. It picks up the smaller groups of people, the ones who play EVE with a different but quite fascinating perspective. People like “Travelers, Explorers and last but not least Role Players” Even people who are just after new exciting stories and details regarding the lore and/or history of EVE could be given the motivation to do something more. So – here – we – GO!

The Origin again:

*When having selected a solar system on the star map I've already been before, why not letting me zoom in into the solar system map.*

The following idea:

*Motivate people to venture out by letting them collect information.*

Possible advantages for EVE Online:

  • People would be given an incentive of venturing in Low or even NullSec (especially for Care Bears or HiSec-Corps)
  • People would be given an overall incentive of traveling around EVE and exploring unknown space
  • People therefore would have something to collect and spend their time on. (instead of ship spinning f.e.)
  • More fleet movement all over New Eden
  • The incentive of venturing to Low or Null by smaller Corps (could lead to more Sov-fights)
  • Tactical advantage for future expansions of smaller corporations or alliances
  • Pretty decent addition for the “Faction Warfare” feature and all the role players out there

The minimum requirements for this feature:

  • Frigate sized ship
  • Probe Launcher / Core Scanner Probes
  • Triangulation Signal Device (New Item)
  • Directional Scanner

The Process of collecting information PART 1

  • Entering a system

  • deploying a minimum of three triangulation signal devices throughout the system
  • (need to be anchored (terms of seconds))
(doesn’t show up in the overview but can be scanned down by scan probes)
(will appear in the directional scan (bigger incentive for people to make more use of the directional scanner))
(the wider the devices are spread the slower the triangulation process but the less directional scans will be needed to complete gathering)

  • More triangulation signal devices mean faster triangulation

  • After anchoring the triangulation signal devices they will be onlined and triangulation will start
  • (Duration depends on distance between triangulation signal devices and the amount of them anchored in space)

  • After anchoring three triangulation signal devices directional scanner is used via directional scans to get the rest of the celestials triangulated to the star map database
  • (Amount of needed directional scans depends on the size of the system, the amount of celestials and the amount of triangulation signal devices anchored)

  • After the system is scanned out the triangulation signal devices can be unanchored and picked up

  • Scanned out systems have a daily chance of spawning a storage container containing a database information shard

  • Scanned Out Systems can be zoomed in to from the star map

The Database

The database is implemented into the pod pilot’s neo cortex and is the very central connection between all his data gathering abilities. It manages the database with its information storage, the links and the information exchange in between:

  • EVELOPEDIA
  • Fiction Portal EVELOPEDIA
  • Epic Arc Missions
  • Faction Warfare
  • Star Map
  • Solar System Map
  • Ship Scanner/ Probe Scanning
  • Directional Scanner

Among the instant ingame access to the EVELOPEDIA and the Fiction Portal it will also collect all lore and historical information gathered through this “To be named feature” and display the collection status all around New Eden.

Database Entries(just an example)

As mentioned before: fully scanned out systems can be zoomed into the solar system view. Not just the overview F11 but fully functional in terms of celestial locations and distances. Database entries are selectable in the “Universe” Menu in the F11 Overview top left. This ordered list or the star map itself can be used to look at a already fully scanned system. The database entries are selectable right from the solar system map. The entries look like bookmarks pins or are set directly to the regarding celestial. Right click on them and the option “show DB entry” can be selected from where the information is displayed. (see “Information itself”) This whole thing could also being embedded in a whole new window, combining plain Mission Running, Epic Arc and Faction Warfare f.e..

Database Limitations

  • Only three selection slots are available (systems/constellations/regions) and can be set as actively scanned by the star map computer at a time in order to receive notifications about spawning storage containers containing Database Information Shards

  • For every slot one solar system can be selected and the use has to be selected (scanning for System Shards, Constellation Shards, Region Shards)

  • The System Selection only notifies about spawning storage containers for the selected system/systems, which will only contain System Information Shards containing Information regarding the system the container is spawning in

  • The Constellation Selection only notifies about spawning storage containers for the selected constellation/constellations which will only contain Constellation Information Shards containing Information regarding the whole constellation the container is spawning in

  • The Region Selection only notifies about spawning storage containers for the selected region/regions which will only contain Region Information Shards containing information regarding the whole Region

Storage Containers and Database Information Shards

  • Storage Containers can’t be scanned down

  • Storage Containers will spawn randomly throughout the already scanned out systems
  • (Storage containers will spawn in the systems even when they are not set as actively scanned by the selection of the player but notifications for the not selected system won’t appear)

  • Storage Containers need to be hacked in order to get access to

  • Information database shards need to be analyzed in order to add the contained lore information to the star map database

  • If a player is scanned down while accessing a storage container and being destroyed or forced to leave in the process the aggressor will be able to access the container and the shard via hacking and/or analyzing

  • Storage Containers will always be guarded by the respective Faction the shard’s contained information is regarding.

  • Either the guarding fleet or the spawned container have a 100% chance of dropping/containing a Faction Blueprint Copy (adaptive to the difficulty)

  • Notification of a storage container spawning in the system, being actively scanned by the star map computer, appears in the ***** window

  • Storage containers contain database shards segmented into:
  • (System Information Shards, (chance of spawn: 50%))
(Constellation Information Shards, (chance of spawn: 25%))
(Region Information Shards (chance of spawn: 10%))

  • Having collected all System Information Shards of a specific constellation will slightly increase the daily chance of spawning a Constellation Information Shard

  • Having collected all Constellation Information Shards of a specific Region will slightly increase the daily chance of spawning a Region Information Shard

  • Shards should not be for sale in the first place but could be used for maybe a future overhaul of the production/ invention system or future iterations of Incarna or the upcoming Game DUST514

  • Information contained in the information shards are expressed as a percentage they are adding to the whole of information that can be found in a System/ Constellation/ Region

  • The difficulty for accessing the containers and the information inside the shard is adaptive to the percentage the shard will add to the database, the Security System (HiSec, LowSec, NullSec, W-Space), the segment regarding Shard (System, Constellation, Region) and the completion status of a player’s database

  • Information Shards have a chance of being corrupted and therefore useless (incentive to revisit the specific system)

  • Former corrupted Information Shards will have the same chances to respawn as any other, with the same chance of being corrupted again.

  • Corrupted spawns, initially guarded by the faction the information is regarding, which respawn (corrupted or not) won’t be guarded a second time

The Triangulation Signal Device

  • Will appear on directional scan
  • Won’t appear in the overview
  • Can be scanned down with core scanner probes
  • Needed to triangulate celestials and add their coordinates to the player’s star map database

The information itself (the beating heart of EVE)

The Information contained in a database shard could be really anything from pictures with a certain description about sleepers over to a well saved secret of one of the factions or just a plain news article to one of the numerous events that have happened in the player driven history of space.
CCP, THIS IS YOUR TURN! This idea could bring EVELOPEDIA and the whole Sandbox with all of it’s players to a lot healthier life.

Just a few examples for information about players or people in general who have truly made an impression over their time being in New Eden: Chribba, Goonswarm, RED Alliance, Ev0ke, Mintchip, Kirith Kodachi and so on so on so on.

Imagine you finding a little piece of background story about the CSM and their first election maybe told by the Chief Executive Officer Hilmar Veigar Pétursson.

Or a short EVEiography about Mynxee.

The great heist between Band Of Brothers and Goonswarm back in 2009 would also be a truly amazing part of History to be testified and found in the far reaches of space. Told by the Alliances leaders of that time and implemented by CCP. Try to contact those guys and interview them for the EVELOPEDIA.

There are such extraordinary lot of things to tell. This could really be a goldmine of good ideas, background information and motivational stories for newcomers and veterans alike. This would bring EVE Online and all of it’s player driven content to life, could testify it’s amazing community and it’s history.

Just a last example of what could be a part of it: The riots in Jita in 2011, told by some of the employees of CCP who were directly confronted with the problem in the first place. Or just a short article from the guys of the economy department of CCP to hear from the effects this event had had.

OK….I’m getting a bit lost…back to topic. (I honestly hope you get the idea.)

The Process of collecting information PART 2

  • Accessing Information

  • Notification of a spawned storage container appears in the ******* window

  • Leveled accessing of the Information within the shard:
  • (Venturing to the system the container is located in)
(Entering the site where the container is located, defeating the guarding fleet)
(Hacking the container in order to get access to the database information shard)
(Analyzing the shard in order to upload the information to the player’s star map database)

  • Loot the field and leave

Additional ideas for this feature

  • To give incentives to revisit a system’s locations appearance of POSes or other sovereignty structures should be limited by time

  • This feature could be used for lore hungry people if ccp could fill maybe the system name f.e. with a bit of lore information (wars, events, people etc.)

What this feature shall be or not be…

This feature idea is far from being complete, especially when it comes to the connectivity between all the involved parts of EVE. EVELOPEDIA, Fiction Portal, Faction Warfare, Exploration, Sovereignty, PvP, PvE, you name it. But I hope I could get you a picture of what I mean. Hopefully there are several more like me who find this kind of idea interesting, even exciting, maybe. I’m pretty sure that I’ve missed a lot of parts that would need quite more detailed information how things could be done but therefore it’s just an idea for now.

I like the basis of the idea, I also support the premise that someone could write up a battle report and add that report to the EVElopedia. Then that report would be linked to the system when someone shows info or enters the interface that you're suggesting.

This would give a rich interactive history of the player events and the areas they effect. Some areas would be dead, but others would be literal treasure troves into the past of what happened years ago when Alliance A defeated Allances B and C in an epic battle lasting 6 hours.

Great Idea, +1

MMOs come and go, but Eve remains.  -Garresh-

No Leela, while your idea has merit, collection of info on player corps and past events related to them makes no sense. I know many are interested on history of sov battles in Eve, but for all others that are not interested in sov corps and null and their politics, its just boring. It also dont fit into CCP fiction well. Keep in mind that player corps aren't the focus of game fiction as created by CCP.

On the other hand, scouting could be made somehow a profession or addition to explorer profession. As both NPC and player corps compete against each other (if we look from fiction point of view), intel gathering as profession makes sense. Making it work well, however, to not be useless, but not be OP and gamebreaking either, is entirely another matter.
