my biggest problem with scanning MTUs is they seem to get cluttered with all the other junk in space, I made a filter to only show them, but it seems to include ALL structures, unless you have a good hit on them, and well... there are a LOT of, mostly pos, structures in space.

Basically this. Practically, the fact that MTU are easy to scan is irrelevant.

they work on in your abscence

Which is another great reason to blow them up. Otherwise when you blow up the carebear his MTU will try to save his wreck. Then you have to brave the loot fairy twice. Pirate

To the op - if you are using an mtu in missions then you are doing it wrong. The loot and salvage from regular npc rats is not worth taking the time to collect. Instead, just blitz the missions - complete them as fast as possible and you will do better on an isk/hr basis. Ofc if you have ocd and feel that you must loot and salvage the rats then when someone invades your space, just scoop mtu and ignore them - unless of course you feel like you want some pvp - but remember its likely not to be just them - but them and their buddies in logi ships (and a booster somewhere hidden in system).

the epic arcs are well worth looting imo. Dont know about salvaging though

The magpie is actually pretty damned difficult to scan, I left one behind once. Never mind! Go fit a cheap scanner and look for it. But no; I had to get a tech 2 scanning ship, complete with tech 2 scanning modules to pin that beach down.

Also, last time I checked, if you leave the region your MTU is in it stops tractoring. It has been some time since I tested that though.

I'm pretty sure it still works if you are off grid, although it's been a few months since I used one. Six months ago I was ratting a lot and dropped one at every anomaly, then came back after I did 4 or 5 to loot/salvage

By that I mean region in the traditional eve sense, not just leaving the unofficial local space known as "grid." :p

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

Please Note: Any advice given comes with the caveat that nothing will be suitable for every situation.

I usually just take the MTU with me for looting as I go.

1. Drop MTU
2. Start killing fools
3. Get loot from MTU
4. Scoop MTU
5. Take gate to next room

If you don't leave it floating unattended in space, no one's going to bother it in high sec for the most part.

In low sec, don't use one at all, as people have already mentioned they are as probable as structures, which is really easy to probe.

EDIT: for the people complaining about clutter -- is it by a moon? It's a POS, ignore signature.

You may want to consider filtering the contents of the MTU by cost and only grabbing the loot over a certain value like 100k or 500k whatever you decide. A typical loot haul from a good level IV may total 1000 M3 of loot worth 20 mill BUT over 19.5 mill of that 20 mill may add up to100 M3 or less of stuff and the other 900 M3 of low value cr@p is only worth half a mill ISK at most.
