When you have played eve for a few years you grow accustom to things. I would say the biggest thing that all eve players get most accustom to is the UI in which they interact with their internet spaceships. For veteran or experienced players, eves UI is like a second hand to them. When that UI is changed or altered in a noticeable way, its almost like breaking that second hand. Sure a broken hand isnt the end of the world, and you will suffer for a short amount of time. Eventually it will recover and players will move on... But why break the hand in the first place?

Ive seen a few changes to the UI over the past 3 1/2 years in eve. Some were needed changes, like the inventory window overhaul, others were just nice flashy addons most of which could be disabled, or a choice between the new and old was present (e.g. the radial menu, the scan overlay, the new starmap). In the case of the new icons released in the latest patch there is no option to disable them or swap them out for the old icons. I find this to be mildly infuriating. When it comes to my UI i don't like changes being force upon me, and im pretty sure a lot of other players feel likewise. Dont get me wrong, im sure a lot of other people like the thought of CCP trying to improve the look of eve and i think its a novel idea too. I think the idea of new icons is a good one, but they should not force such a seemingly minor, yet big visual change on players.

Going back to my analogy of "breaking players seconds hands"... there is a simple way for CCP to add this new UI content without all the fuss, all they need to do is add the ability to chose their icons for their overviews from presets. (presets containing the old and new icons, and possibly the addition of any icons that were developed and diddnt make it into the patch). If this feature were added it would be more along the lines of "evolving players second hands." Give Players the choice to change and adapt to a UI that they can alter at their own discretion. By doing this players can remain comfortable with their UI setups and have their immersion unhindered and even advanced. Everyone wins wit a feature like this, CCP gets to release the new content they developed, and the players get to modify their UI to what they feel most optimal for them.

TLDR;

Arrowadd icon preferences into eve. Players can choose icons they want from presets and optimize their UI based on their preference enhancing their gameplay.

Arrowhave icon customization as part of the overview settings where players can choose what icons to use for ships/ npcs/ celestials...etc

Arrowinclude old the old icons with the new ones in game now, and even include other proposed icons that diddnt make it into the patch(if there are any...more options would be awesome)

Arrowbe able to create icon profiles (like bracket profiles on the overview)

Arrowadd color options to icons add more options for how they look

I've only recently got used to the changed icons on the bar on the left and I still have to use the old map when I want to probe something down quickly because I can't go as fast on the new one yet. Seems like being able to switch to the old icons on and off would let people adapt to the change at their own speed (perhaps turn them off for their PvP toon and on for other accounts) and that would be a good thing.

Yeah, some icon preferences would be good.

Let me tell you, the asteroids were scary today!

Maybe I'll get used to it, but I really don't want to. lol

They are just there on the overview, demanding my attention. I like the new icons, but can I just please turn that part off? They look like they're ready to jump off my overview and attack me. Scrolling through columns and columns of them can be stressful because they look like gate camps.

I bet they are messaging each other asking if they want to knock my Venture out of align.

They are plotting against me. I know this because the overview is telling me this, and the overview is never wrong!

For a while now Eve has often rewarded veteran experience. The effect of experience is an accumulation of all the little things that may put you ahead of a newer player, one marginal step at a time. The more often you change things the more you undermine the contribution and effect of experience. Changing icons may seem like a minor change, but it has a cumulative effect with all the other changes constantly taking place to undermine the advantage of veteran experience. It should definitely have come as a choice.

Give us ways to customize plz.

Yesterday I found that it took me an extra two or three seconds to figure out that I was on grid with a dessie and to lock him. And that's a problem because small ship solo combat often comes down to the last couple of shots. I'm sure it will get slightly better with time. But it's pretty worrying.

Can we have the option to colour code icons? I really need *all* player ships to be in an obvious pop-out colour so that I can see the bloody things instantly. (I can see the NCP ships just fine; they're red.)

Lastly, did CCP do a human-computer-interaction usability study on these new icons? HCI is a real domain with real cognitive psychologists running real studies. This icon fiasco is not as bad as the jumpgate headswing fiasco of a few years ago. But I'm still scratching my head about why an HCI professional is not on staff helping design the HUD. (CCP I can refer you to one that's currently in Iceland if you want.)

Oh my lord.

Such moaning.

I hate change.

This isn't the familiar thing I am so used to.

I refuse to learn anything new!

Such tears.

So sweet.

I don't care.

HTFU.

Get used to it.

It's here to stay.

aaaaand, no you're not getting an option to turn it off cause of reasons

It really isn't going to take you very long to get accustomed to the new logos and symbology. CCP also will not keep things for the sake of "Legacy" as it will require maintenance which they are not prepared to put in place.

When the ship tech tree tool was released (I don't feel right calling it ISIS and then saying it was really "cool" and "well recieved" - eurrrgh, feel dirty now) everybody loved the ship icons used in it and requested CCP IMMEDIATELY put them into the overview.

To be fair, it is a big change, however, it's a good change. The Icons now in use are far far more informative. Trust me. You will enjoy the overview so much more in the future once you have committed murder it all to memory

i agree with this, anyone who pvp's on a regular basis camn see these new icons are far too fiddly for immediate identification,

its the drones that are the worst, they look like frigate bracket, imagine fighting 5 ishkurs and trying to work out where the ships are in amongst the drones

Because it's soooo hard to look at the "Type" column?

As far as CCP instituting an icon preference tab, I'm sure that's on their list right under adding an option to turn back to the old neocom.

It's called the overview.

That one sentence tells me you don't... oh wait, you're triumvirate. Nevermind, that already answers what I was going to say.

my major point is, everyone has their own preferences, and ultimately players should be given a choice when it comes to their UI. Some players have welcomed the new UI changes, others like me have spent sooo much time with the old stuff and are most comfortable with it. If a feature like icon preferences was added everybody would win, you get to keep the new icons or switch to the old, in addition to swapping icons around for what you feel most optimal and comfy. I think everyone should be a fan of having UI options as a player, dont you?

I think this is a good idea. While I am liking the new icons this far, the ability to choose what shapes you get, or return to the old shapes, or get different colors would be great.
