AT&T Backbone -> Highwind CDN problems... the real launcher issue?

MY launcher issue appears to be connectivity related & well upstream from my ISP (Mediacom). Maybe some kind of traffic shaping error going on.

1. It is intermittent day to day, but consistent for hours at a time.

2. It ALWAYS manifests as extremely slow (as in 500 B/s - 1.5 KB/s) downloads of that weeks patch, the graphics in the background of the launcher, the repair tool index files, even the direct links on the forum for downloading the new launcher manually.
(i.e. http://cdn1.eveonline.com/EveOnlineLauncher/release/EVEOnlineLauncher_2_2_878305.exe)
even portions of the eve forums seem to load slowly.

3. The problem seems to be somewhere between the east coast portion of AT&T's backbone and whichever hwcdn.net server that is cdn1.eveonline.com.

Here is the relevant section of my traceroute:

7 35 ms 43 ms 39 ms cr2.attga.ip.att.net [12.122.18.1]
8 137 ms 108 ms 38 ms ggr3.attga.ip.att.net [12.122.140.149]
9 * * * Request timed out.
10 38 ms 32 ms 35 ms 205.185.217.194
11 35 ms 35 ms 35 ms map2.hwcdn.net [205.185.216.10]

4. I can sometimes brute force my way into the game after patch day by deleting the launcher and running the repair tool over and over again until it somehow magically completes the download.

5. No other game or service on my computer experiences these problems.

Here are some relevant threads on message boards for my ISP, Mediacom

This looks like the same exact problem I am having, as are several people I am trying to get started playing EVE.

We are all east coast, US.

We are also all Mediacom.

This is a much deeper problem than a simple launcher issue.

See this thread on Mediacom subforum of DSLReports:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30075259-GA-Connectivity-problems-with-only-one-online-game-Traffic-shaping

Those are Mediacom users from Georgia and Indiana, common route problem seems to be the AT&T -> Highwinds connection...

Yes, Confirming I'm Mediacom in Pensacola and what the OP is describing is what's happening to me - exactly!

Bump, same, mediacom near pensacola, fl.

Is there nothing that can be done?

I tried using google DNS, no affect.

I am getting frustrated with this.

Every time they patch, I am left spending 2-3 days trying to get this fixed.

I have had ZERO effective help from submitting tickets.

I guess I came back to EVE at a poor time.

I tried to get a group of people to play this game. This has become a huge embarrassment and a running joke around the office.

EVE, they game we all want to play, but can't.

ATT in AR myself. Experiencing the same issues.

Google/Opendns don't help.

The only way I'm able to play is by running rescache.exe and launching from the exe in the bin folder.

Launcher unavailable for weeks.

After all the file submissions - the only thing they said that I could do was pretty much cancel my accounts. Very tempting honestly, if this keeps up I just might do it. 5 accounts = $75 a month, but hey - CCP can afford it.

This is just lazy as $chite network administration. Par for the course these days. I am sure it's a bunch of finger pointing going on between Highwind, AT&T, and maybe the regional ISPs like Mediacom...

I used to work for an ISP back in the dial-up/early DSL days, and if this kind of thing went on for this long PEOPLE WERE FIRED.

This generation of IT workers has all the hard work done for them with the advanced monitoring and logging systems available to them today...

HEY FELLAS, open up some terminal sessions and freaking VERIFY!

I'll even resurrect my old Linux honeypot server and let y'all # around on it for awhile if need be.

BTW: I have not submitted a ticket because it looks like hundreds of other people on here have had no luck with that route, so it's time for name and shame on the public forum.

I found this recently.

https://forums.mediacomcable.com/index.php?topic=27832.0

I'm from Mobile, so more south east USA representing.

What usually happens for me is that I have to wait till midnight to 1 am to download anything from Eve servers.

So its the same intermediate fault that everyone else is getting.

AT&T backbone and Mediacom decided to **** EvE players off.

Mediacom - Valdosta GA. Exact same issue. If I try from 2 pm til midnight, then I can forget updating. Have to grab it first thing in the morning or I can't play.

Grand Bay, checking in here. I've been dealing with this crap for months, myself, and it usually comes back to this router [204.245.39.38] when I experience this issue; which I am also dealing with at the moment and cannot play. I've had to leave the launcher running all day, regardless of whether or not I am actively playing the game or I can't connect in the evenings at all. I contacted Mediacom several times about it, they confirmed the issue was with Level 3 Communications (carrier) but it is "out of their network" I was actually playing fifteen minutes ago because I left the launcher running all day but the power got knocked out for a moment and the launcher predictably isn't working. Same issues as the OP, even the EVE Online Forum fails to completely load. No other services are affected.

Also, thanks for that link. What you're describing is exactly what I've been dealing with, since February.

I've been on university super internet. Now that I'm home, I've been dealing with this nonsense with only EVE. Apparently every other "level 3 communications" thingy works for battle.net, steam, and origin just fine.

I don't even bother letting the launcher run unless the backdrop immediately appears. Otherwise the connection is junk and why bother locking out 8% of my cpu to the launcher while it does little to nothing.

Looks like I'm staying up late to download an eve patch again.

Dear god, I hope the poor bastards who are in the same situation didn't delete the game and think they can download on demand. They'll be locked out of EvE for days, or playing without station models. Hope they like circles and squares cause that's all they'll see.

Sorry for the double post.

Like ******* clock work.

12:13 am in the morning and I can download like a champ again.

I bet you there is a traffic cap that releases around midnight central TZ. You know when it happens because the backdrop on the launcher immediately appears and the download starts at a reasonable speed.

Wtf?

I have been on mediacoms tech support page yesterday and think we made good progress in getting this resolved, found that in 2010 another ISP had a similar problem only with Eve and they got it resolved, I have them the info and they are now contacting that other ISP to hopefully get it resolved, so hopefully soon this issue so many of us mediacom users will be resolved.

But I still wonder what makes Eve online unique that some ISP's have issues with connecting to Eve's client servers like this. Not sure if it is something to do with their servers are based in London and I read that some other people have issues with connecting to certain sites in London.

I also have mediacom and cannot even download the launcher from CCP, until I tried a VPN. Installed the file on the PC and yep, no luck it just sits there.

What is a total crock is that we are having to crowd-source getting this fixed. Why are we having to do all the leg work here?
