Cycling the system wallpapers to keep the game refreshing.

Hi,

This isn't a balance post about how much ISK per hour someone makes in any different part of space, but about how it can begin to feel by playing in a space that never visually changes.

So I have logged about 1000 hours into EVE according to Steam, and today with all the new ships (they feel new), it's like they all got a new paintjob and they feel really fresh and fun to have a look through all of them and take them out for a spin. That's great! So great job on that, devs! I think you guys did a lot better with this graphics pass than the first version of the new rendering process.

However, I got to space, flew around a bit, and I noticed... You know what doesn't change? The space wallpaper. It's always the same.

I remember when I first started EVE, they were pretty darn impressive and they really felt like space, but after a while, and countless mining runs... Well, you kind of really start to know what Gallente space looks like. All the nebulas, and where they break, and what colors it uses and the same for other highsec systems.

So it got me thinking. How many people haven't seen some of the really awesome lowsec and 0.0 system wallpapers? I bet some artists out there at CCP spent countless hours on that and how many people actually get to see them? You guys at CCP should gather some data about how used your art assets. I think a lot of them are underused.

A lot of players play in highsec, and if you do have a playstyle that revolves around that, chances are you have never seen some of the cool looking systems out there that play a big part in keeping the game feel fresh and new.

And it's not a problem solely related to highsec.

A lot of us live in highsec space. Maybe you live in nullsec space. We have our assets based there, and our logistic routes there, and they all revolve around those particular systems that we have setup in. Even if we venture out to see some new systems, we won't necessarily be able to benefit from that experience because we won't live in those systems. Players that do, will simply transition through, and yay, I've seen some new stuff. Now, back to the old stuff. Back to "my stuff".

So, I think a better idea, to keep the game feeling new, is to rotate system wallpapers so that eventually Gallente space looks like I don't know, a wallpaper used in a lowsec system. The universe isn't a static entity, and especially on a such grand scale.

Planets and moons of course, shouldn't change, and the location of those objects in space, but why not the wallpapers which is the majority of what we look at everyday?

Though solely highsec players have seen the least of the game, I'm sure there are a lot of 0.0 players, or even lowsec players, who have logged in countless hours and haven't see a ton of the game because of the same reasons and don't have the luxury to just go out for a cruise ride in a neighboring system just so they can see some new stuff, because of the way players react to such an incursion.

Highsec space, for example, probably doesn't feel as familiar to some as their nullsec home.

I think a lot of players can begin to feel "trapped" and see a whole lot of the same stuff when they undock everyday. A large part of EVE is visual, in presentation. Whether you play in highsec space, lowsec space, or are part of a large alliance that owns a part of nullsec space, I think you might appreciate if the game wallpapers in your system changed from time to time. Packing up your assets and trying to carve out a living somewhere else, because hey, I'm bored of looking at this system, doesn't really apply a lot of the time.

Wouldn't that be cool? That's why I like when Incursions happen in a system. I thought about it a lot too, (hey travelling takes a while, the neurons have to do something), and I've realized it's not because it presents a gameplay aspect for me or even an opportunity that arises for me to take part in, but because the system wallpaper changes to reflect that and it feels refreshing when you're traveling through the same route for the 100th time, to see something new. Something different.

I think that part is very important in keeping EVE relevant.

Our game is very unique and different than other mmos out there, but it doesn't mean it doesn't suffer from some major problems a lot of them do. For example, in this case, it can be compared to the fact that for a long time, in, WoW, for example, people didn't do a lot of the raids because they were locked out of them by way of progression, and that meant a lot of the subscribers simply didn't see the content that the developers put out.

So they made content that only 0.5% of the population went through. So, in our case, when graphic assets are locked behind mechanics like security or a corporation's base of operations, I think that is similar because a lot of us simply live out of these systems. It's not as simple as going somewhere else for a sight seeing trip.

And then after a while, you're back to your old space, and the same wallpaper it uses. I think that can get old after a while, no matter where you are playing. I don't think space should ever feel boring. It's a grand theme and it should not feel like a stagnant element.

And it's not good, to have a majority of your playerbase, not see it. Or see it in different chunks than other players. I see EVE in the same light, in that a lot of the assets in the game, like the wallpapers, is content that is heavily underused. Whether you're in highsec or in lowsec, or even in nullsec, I think you should never lose that feeling of awe, of being in space, just because when you undock you see the same wallpaper everytime.

What do you think? Is keeping the space fresh important, or is keeping the "identity" of a system more important? Maybe it can be an option you can toggle, like inspace skinning. Maybe it can only have a range of wallpapers to cycle through. These are just some of my thoughts.

So, basically you want that the Domain Nebula is at some point replaced with the dirt spec of the red Minmatar gas cloud or the green puke stain of Branch? I rather not have that. Most, if not all Null sec are unattractive in my opinion when you compare them with the Domain nebula, this green something of Branch in particular, or the Kalevala Expanse or the blue Caldari soup. These nebulae are representations of astronomical anomalies. For instance, the nebula visible from Fountain, Aridia, Kor-Azor, Khanid, Tash-Murkon represents the Cauldron, the other flame like nebula visible from Delve, Querious, Catch, Curse represents either the Vapor Sea or Pool of Radiance. Even the Kalevala Expanse nebula is likely a representation of the Ginnungagap black hole. These things do not just switch places, shape or color on a whim.

Most of the players in EVE can already experience most of the best nebula artworks in EVE, as the best nebulae are visible from High and Low sec. Neither the already mentioned puke stain of Branch nor the greenbluish blob of the Impass area, which are the only 2 nebulae not visible from either area, are worth the effort. The white Perrigen Falls nebula is the only remaining nebula art assets that would be worth a look in my opinion. Everything else is visible from one or another High sec or Low sec area.

All in all, your suggestion does not "keep the space fresh", it makes it confusing when you log off under a Minmatar nebula in Amarr on one day and log back in the other day under a Gallente Gas cloud. It is, as mentioned, illogical as well. Evolving nebulae, very slowly evolving mind you, would be something I can agree with.

This wouldn't make any sense as the different parts of space doesn't have the same nebula's and such nearby...
If this was a thing, it would wreck the game.

Yes, I see your point. I only suggested cycling the wallpapers because that's how EVE works. Asking them to be dynamic and change shapes might be a little too much for the system to handle.

Maybe cycling them out of a limited pool of assets might be more reasonable - a pool of assets that looks similar?

But then it gets complicated. :)

Also, don't you feel sorry for the poor saps living in Branch? P

They are CFC: I do not feel sorry for this kind of people. And that nebula suits their ... attitude very well. Roll

try changing systems once in a while then or regions... lots of different backgrounds if you don't sit in one highsec system all the time

This.

Once upon a time, years ago, one of my biggest complaints with EVE was that the space backgrounds were low resolutions, with the stars too dim/dull, and the space too bright/colorful. I asked for space backgrounds that look more like real space, to increase immersion, and give the feeling that you are actually flying a spaceship. I asked for mostly BLACK backgrounds. Much darker, less bright colored gasses.

A while ago, we got the high(er) resolution backgrounds that we have now, and while they're still not as black as I would like, they are a massive improvement.

Along with the better colors and resolution of the backgrounds, CCP introduced something amazing...

A seemingly REAL galaxy map, where the nearby "real" stars that you could actually jump to were brighter and bigger than the "background" stars, where certain nebulae (background views) existed persistently through the galaxy, and changed in a way that made sense when you traveled. Now, "Green nebula" was visible up close from X constellation, and "Red nebula" was visible, but small and far away. If you traveled from X constellation to Y constellation, those nebulae would slowly change size and switch places, with Y being the up close one in your new region, and X being in the background, left behind.

This is AWESOME.

To randomly change the backgrounds in the SAME system... is frankly WE TODD DEAD. (say it out loud).

Seriously can't stress enough how dumb of an idea this is. Completely the opposite of immersive, for NO reason whatsoever, except you want variety in your scenery... which is acheived, in ALL realities (real or virtual), by going to different places.

I don't know why it is, but I just suspect everyone of being a troll when they post horrible ideas, so well done if trolling. You sure made me upset.

The space background is not 'wallpaper'. It's a representation of actual nearby stars and nebula. This could be made clearer by having the Nebula's appear on the maps I agree, but it's not simply a placeholder image.

1000 hours.....that's cute, and you want to make solar systems basically teleport around the galaxy.

heres a question how often when you look out at the sky at night does the night sky change, you know the constellations and all that, or the back ground of space?

ive been playing this game a lot longer.
Time online 679d 18h 08m per eveboard.

We used to have some awesome back grounds with sites with twisters and such that stretched from 1 side of a nebula to another...watch the old eve fades video.

good times, I wouldn't mind having some of those back grounds redone

So much this. Set your destination and click on "show route in space." When you jump to places via gates or jump drives, you actually orient towards where you're going. It's pretty amazing, IMO.

Changing that would break all that (and make no real sense from a simulation perspective).

If you haven't realized yet the main hisec nebulae are correspondent to racial color for zoning clarity and lore in some cases (Amarr throne worlds nebula looks like ascending to Heaven), also asking CCP to make hisec more fun/enjoyable defeats the core GAME aspect of EvE, if everyone knew exactly how to play the game and grew a pair there would be no need for Concorde and hisec at all. The whole point of an MMO is to >group up< and do things real world doesn't offer. This is one of if not the last true Sandbox MMO's still active since over the years people like you come from console games and wana just have all the cake solo playing and claim they're an MMOer, what you describe is like asking for a formula 1 race track for your motor scooter.

Solo stuff is supposed to be dull so that when you PvP the grass is greener ...1st rule of any pvp focused MMO
