We all have a carebear inside us, so why do pretend we don't?

EVE Online is painted as some scary monster with a harsh learning curve, but the reality is entirely different.

I use the word carebear in the usual sense players do, usually those players that are all about risk minimisation.

Which happens to include everyone.

Let's look at the carebear elements that apply to every player.

Assets.

NPC stations store them safely, to infinity and beyond. For FREE!

What sort of carebear craziness is this?

If EVE was harsh, a descendant of a Wall St banker would clean you out in a New York minute.

If EVE was hardcore, nothing is safe. Not your bank, not your ship hangars, not your Jump Clones.

But EVE is carebear, because we all have a little plushy inside us, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Perhaps some carebears think they are not carebears because they PvP, but they only do that because they PvP in a carebear way, where the odds are ever in their favor. The usual ganks and zergs etc, which are all about minimising risk. Safety in numbers, the more carebears cuddling, the better.

Me, I'd like it if we could find some other schism to name call over. Carebear is as tattered as an old teddy bear now.

CCP might find a little wormhole one day that leads to a gangsta paradise of hardcore happiness, but for now we are all cute carebears, skipping and playing the days away.

o7 Fly safe.

As we carebears say.

This is what happens when everyone uses the term "carebear" so loosely.

How long until this translates to real life?
"You had a good day at work, Jimmy? Safe, was it?"
"...f---ing Carebears."

Most people ARE carebears, regardless of how much they shout or shoot people..

Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better.

So, you're saying we are a species who are all carebear at heart?

Which means, when you really think about it, your definintion has no value.

I mean, managing risk in EVE can use the principles of minimising risk in RL as in HSE.

Yup, and without proper definition. There is a difference between "risk management" and "risk aversion".
Although I don't use the expression myself, due to all sorts of definitions floating about, I'd think the latter is required to properly talk about carebears.

One persons risk management is another's risk aversion. One persons's calculated risk is another's foolhardiness.

I've seen both sides as a former biker and someone who bungee-jumped back in '88.

Lack of perma-death is the ultimate in carebear.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.

If you lose a station in SOV-null, you have to create a contract to get your assets back. Much consequence.

Usually the term "carebear" is applied to those who try and manage risk by having the Devs change the rules.

Care bears shoot lasers out of their belly.

They just don't go full ****** and shoot everything that moves and then scratch their head when there is nothing left to shoot.
