I saw some devblogs stating Tengu got nerfed, Ishtar got nerfed, Sentries got nerfed.

So what is a good training strategy for a new character?

I did a quick search but couldn't find it.
Is there a link to the thread?

Gallente master race, it won't matter how hard any nerf bats hit, the Gallente will still have a superior number of hulls. Train Gallente now, Have happy fun Gallente master race times with me later \o/

The current ship meta goes beyond just the flavor of the month.

A rough breakdown of the metas is this:

Shields - Designed to boast higher self rep ability with faster cycles, immediete reps, shield boost amplifiers, and active hardeners. Very reliant on Cap and drastically increases signature radius but has no effect on speed.
Best for:
-PVE Ships / Incursions
-Kiting Ships (See Below)
-Active burst tank setups
-Mining ships
-Passive setups ( Passive tanking tengu for example )

Armor - Designed to boast the maximum possible raw EHP and effective buffer tank. Armor has passive hadeners that are very effective and does not increase signature radius, instead slows a ship down and reduces its mobility and benefits from propulsion.
Best For:
- PVP Ships ( not to say shield ships will never win )
- Prolonged engagements
- Heavy tackle
- Fleet setups
- Capital Ships ( generally speaking this is due to armor caps supporting armor ships to keep in the meta and allow staying power in TIDI )
- Brawler setups

Brawling - Get up close and handle business, favors blasters/rockets/pulse lasers/ and autocannons
Best With:
- Assault frigates
- Heavy assault cruisers
- Cruisers
- Battleships
- Tactical Destroyers
- Some T3 setups
- Battlecruisers
- Suicide Ganking
- Dreadnoughts

Kiting - Keep the enemy at range, keep them locked down with a warp disruptor or bonused warp scrambler. Maintain high speed and low signature radius for optimal results.
Best with:
- Interceptors
- Garmurs
- Some T3 setups
- Many Cruisers including drone and HAC's
- Drone Fleets ( Except Domi/Battleship fleets )
- Tactical Destroyers

Now this is just a rough breakdown of the basic game-play styles available, generally its best to find out what you like best, then skill into it, then refine your tactics. Training into multiple sects is a good idea as well as it makes you harder to nerf outright ( say you train just ishtar and it gets nerfed, your left with a worse ship and no fallback ) but it does take a lot of time.

Hope this helps a bit.

a pure breakdown of the current meta

ishtars still pretty OP
Domis same

Tengus are op against anything not ishtars

Proteus/legion/loki fleet pretty good

Ravens are worse the cruise typhoons(i will let you theory craft why)

Rattlesnake fleets are super cheap since the imperium farms them at will.

Stufft.

The current meta has been the same meta for about 2 years now with no real signs of it going away. Domis and ishtars and tengus,

Bad idea, train for one of the T3 destroyers instead.
Svipul or soon to be released Jackdaw preferably.

The enyo is a time tested ship, it works well and does its ji=ob admirably, its a good place to start before plunging headlong into more complex ships like Tactical Destroyers

How good are the tactical destroyers? What about Recons for solo PvP?

The tactical destroyers are very respectable, but more skill intense than frigates or assault frigates

And recons are not something usually used to solo with 2 exceptions being the curse and pilgrim.
And thats because of all the recons they boast the highest tank, highest DPS, and they have nuetralizer bonuses.
I use a rook for solo PVP but its touch and go, theres a good chance i die if i fail a jam more than once.

Tactical destroyer are extremely good.
They completely outperform Assault Frigates in my opinion.

Svipuls are everywere, good tank, good speed, good dps, what's not to like ?

In Nullsec

Apart from groups of people who live locally all you see is

tengus

SOE frigates

interceptors.

A few Svipul for a bit before they were nerfed. less now

Ishtars are around but only in alliances. Drone damage means no need to restock on the ammo

If you like being constrained by meta gaming, then stay in k-space and fly the same ships for years. Tengu, Dominix, Ishtar is okay, but I prefer the wormhole meta: fly what you want. It truly is a liberating experience to not be shoehorned into a hull type.

So pray to Bob, train covops V, and then jump into whatever is useful for that fleet. Armor logi? I'll bring a Proteus. Hole control, let me grab my 1200 DPS tanked Onyx. Blowing up some random dude? Can I bring a drake? Yes, you can bring a drake. Really.

Free your mind of metas, free your bank of red, and fly what you want to fly.
