CCP - Building ant hills and magnifying glasses for fat kids

Not even once

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

What we need is a mobile app that allows skill changes and basic management of in game stuff like mail, fitting, chat. Can you imagine the application of a chat channel API. Jabber would become a thing of the past... Throw some ads into the app, create a paid version and let people choose what they want.

But a full blown client for mobile devices, don't be stupid.

Actually, it seems like the game might be pretty amenable to a tablet deal.

Maybe not to thumbing around on your cell phone, but honestly the way the interface feels a lot like it's designed for someone poking at the screen with a finger anyhow. Hotkey implementation so awkward it might as well not exist, the radial slide menus, driving by double-tapping on space, etc. Wouldn't be that many tweaks to make it work with a slab.

That said, CCP making an easy adaptation to make the interface more accessible is, how to phrase this positively... not gonna happen. We've been down the road of hoping for obvious features before, usually ends up as "the square brackets in space are now round.... MIND BLOWN".

Agreed

And CCP does not have time to develop EvE Online Mobile as all the mobile networks worldwide need to be upgraded so that you can have faster data transfer rate.

And also the mobile phones does not have enough ram, processing power & gpu power like a PC does.

So no ccp will not make a mobile version of EvE online.

It's not just unpopular, but not using a mobile phone in this day and age is just plain ******* stupid.

This is legit but I'm curious: why do you feel that way?

I guess it's not dislike of technology or lack of 'natural' human interaction, since you're obviously using a pc or such yourself. So, why you mad at mobile thingys?

An app that allow you to check the Market from some stations of your choice and do some Market PvP would be nice, I would definitely pay for that, and so did hundred of thousands when WoW did it with their Remote Auction House. Nice occasion for CCP to get back at them for stealing the PLEX system. It would also make the Market a lot more fluid.

That plus being able to access Corp chat, that would be golden.

I swore i replied to this thread.. anyway...

CCP tried this twice already. Once in 06/07 with the university of Iceland, students were working on a mobile client. The students graduated, and that project died.

Then with ccp's mobile division, which seems ot have been axed in the 'New Eden on PC' initiative in 2014.. but as ccp seems ot be going all over the bloody place again, this might get a revival.

I would LOVE to play eve on a tablet, or even have some minor functionality on a phone. But we will see

OMG Comet Mining idea!!! Comet Mining!

I made a internal post on ccp forums/ confluence about this this csm term. Limited acces too markets and stuff mentioned would add for me. Dont think it will raise subscriptions direclty but its a way too stay with the time.

On the communication part you have unlimited options yourself, i have allaince slack, and skype rooms, forums, facebook pages, endless things u can set up there.

The skillqueu u can set for ages these days so alot is mitigated. Question is if u want resources assigned to enable on all mobiel platforms and keep them updated, or have those resources goto hardcore eve.

I dont have that answer, and have brought it up internally, mixed feelings btw
Yeah, you would need somebody in CCP to really believe in the potential.

There is almost none. 3 years ago, I'd considered it impossible to play most of my time on a tablet. Give it another couple of years and almost every tablet will be suitable.

Thank you for that link. I work for a webhosting company that caters to soccer moms and we've had clients (including me) getting tons of spam from these folks all of the sudden. I know Facebook has a "It's not really spam if we're sending it even though the address is a spam honeypot that couldn't have signed up for an account" policy. Now it makes sense as to why we're getting it from these folks now as well.

One less thing I have to do today....

Because they turn people into oblivious disconnected zombies that bump into walls and walk right into oncoming traffic.

Also you should look into how evolution works... Basically the more you think and do things by yourself the smarter you get, the more technology does things for you, the dumber you get...

Yes, I use a PC. I use a PC to study, write code, make websites, write books, scripts and poetry. And sometimes I play with it too. But what I don't do is carry my PC everywhere I go and use it like a big intellectual crutch.

And FYI, several studies have now confirmed that ALL cellphones cause brain damage by way of overheating the outer layers of the brain via microwaves. The more extreme manifestation of this is a little thing called brain cancer.

Not that I'm one of those dweebs that dreams of living forever by way of devouring organic vegetables and jogging in circles like a f**king lab rat.

I primarily don't like cell phones because carrying something on my person that allows anyone to pester me at any given time is in my top five worst nightmares of all time.

Guys, it's 2015. Everyone's playing with their mobile phone or tablet many hours a day.

On the train, during boring office meetings, while you go outdoors for a smoke, during TV commercials, in bars, restaurants, EVERWHERE!

I say it would be only natural - but also awesome! - to be able to log in to EVE from your mobile.

Say the mobile client would be limited to in-station activities (can't undock). There would still be a ton of things you could do: chat, update skill queue, corp stuff, market stuff, potentially asset management and even industry, ...!

Out of my butt I'll pull this figure: both ACU and subs would go up 30% at the very least. Seriously, there's so much potential for fun and money!

CCP do this nao! For us EVE addicts and for your own income, too.

its obvious that this would help the game, still they prefered to burn their money on vampire games and other bullshit.. bad management decisions to not have a mobile client with limitations already

The technical challenges are significant for something like this. You have a few options that all basically suck balls.

You can hire a team to do a native iOS app against the Metal API. That means rewriting all of the game engine in objective-C. You then also have to hire a team to write a native android app in Java. That means re-writing the entire game engine again.

Both of those still have to communicate with TQ, and that means the core Python team has a ton of work to do on APIs.

A thin app wrapper around the game client will perform so badly it's a joke. But maybe we don't care about that. Then what about all the assets? Are you going to eat up 13 gigs on someone's mobile device? Are you going to scale them down? Okay, great, now you have new art teams involved with scaling assets so that they look remotely presentable on all the different mobile platforms that this can run on. And if you go with an app wrapper around the Python client, you still have to manage the performance overhead there.

Even if there were a way to project a massive increase in subs to justify hiring two completely new and very different teams (spoiler alert, there is no way to do that), you still have to bring in two teams with very different ideologies and programming paradigms from what CCP is used to, and you have to integrate the obj-C and Java people with the Python people.

Even if the money is there, this is a management nightmare. You will have conflict between teams who want to implement things differently. Some things that are easy in Python are challenging in obj-C, and vice versa, and the same goes for Java, so you have a three-way fight for every aspect of every piece of the game engine implementation.

Not to mention that you have 3x the code base to fix bugs in.

This is honestly one of the worst ideas I can think of in terms of CCP having a long, bright, healthy future. I really hope they don't try to do this.

Keeping up with the times is not an excuse for doing something stupid that has a good chance of wrecking the company, if executed well. And executing badly is just not something that should be considered.

Keep in mind that I'm not one of the people who thinks that CCP devs are stupid and incompetent. They have, in my opinion, a very righteous and well-placed hesitance to meddle with legacy code--an opinion shared, by the way, by almost every serious software developer, including people as notable as Jeff Atwood, who calls it the worst mistake you can ever make.

No. I'm voicing concerns here that are predicated on my enormous respect for the positive impact CCP has had on the Python community in general and the pypy project in particular.

Assuming the absolute best about CCP still leaves me with the thought that doing a mobile game client well is a truly terrible idea.
It's a terrible idea for the dev culture, it's a terrible idea for the money aspects, it's a terrible idea to fork the game engine into 3 different languages, it's a terrible idea to not do any of the 3 former things, and it's a terrible idea from any sane management point of view.

I really hope they don't do this.

I honestly feel like I just read fifty shades of dumb. --CCP Falcon
