in l4 missions, if i drop a mobile tractor unit at the start of the mission, will npc rats attack it?

Nope. But you should take a bookmark to get back there later when the mission beacon is gone.

EDIT: Also other players may kill and loot it without Concord intervention (the attacker just gets a suspect flag).

My understanding is that they are extremely easy to scan down also. So if you are missioning in Osmon for example and drop one you are almost guaranteed guests in your mission space.

Also like Tipa already said the mission space and the bookmark as well as the acceleration gates all disappear when you turn in the mission so book mark each room or each MTU that you drop.

another thing to note is that the MTU can be scanned down but your wrecks can not.

Correct, MTU's are extremely easy to scan so I advise caution when using one.

Many of the players that would try to loot / salvage your stuff or bait you into a fight scan for MTU's not for ships since they are so easy to scan. That and MTU are rarely used by anyone other than mission runners and people running sites so that helps these players by reducing the number of possible places to look for what ever they want.

An option is the old fashioned bookmark a wreck in each pocket, turn in the mission and then return and salvage / loot all the things. Advantages to this is you force them to scan you and once turned in only those with the bookmark can get back to the wrecks. Disadvantage to this is it takes longer to complete the mission and loot/salvage.

The rules of engagement between players when one of them has shot at or destroyed your MTU can be confusing at first so make sure you understand them before you loose a ship because of them.

I just drop a MTU when I begin my attack.

If you need to keep moving for tanking purposes, then just orbit the MTU.

The Magpie MTU is actually kind of difficult to scan down, granted your pretty much guarenteing somebody wil pop it as they have like a 200 mil price tag. But if you're scanned down it won't be because of it =P

MTU should pay itself fairly quickly. I bought 5 MTUs when they where new. Just checked my hangar and i have 4 left ;) so it doesn't happen too often that someone is killing them. (tbh i proably forgot to pick it up)

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

I wouldn't call them extremely easy. They are about the same as shield-tanked cruisers.

Anyone that's lived in a wormhole can scan them fast. People like me that only occasionally probe down stuff take a little while to get them.

If you are new to L4 missions, most probably best technique for you is to use range as tank. That means jump 100 km from rats with your large micro jump drive. In such case drop mtu before you jump and stay where you jumped. If someone comes to pop your mtu you can jump back and save your mtu. They have nice EHP so they will not be killed in 10 seocnds. Just do not forget to pickup best loot out of it before you scope it. Or attacker will get the loot from the can.

As a general rule players do not attack an MTU because they want what it contains, they attack your MTU specifically to give you kill rights and they hope you will take it and try to killl them. But beware, they are there for you and their ships are fit to KILL YOU so consider this carefully before attacking them or your MTU may not be the only you lose that day.

Fight to protect an MTU and few million ISK in loot and risk losing your mission ship because they were just scouts for a gank squad or a player who was there for you anyway or simply consider it a cost of running missions and warp away the choice is yours.

I use mtu's for my ratting such purposes too. In fact I put a few in the cargo, and drop them in each belt or site and come back after the loot is scooped. If you feel uncomfortable in your local, then find a new local.... Roll

my biggest problem with scanning MTUs is they seem to get cluttered with all the other junk in space, I made a filter to only show them, but it seems to include ALL structures, unless you have a good hit on them, and well... there are a LOT of, mostly pos, structures in space.

Agreed, it does suck, there should be a deployable structures filter or some such, in the meantime, you can drop your probes on the moon and then ignore those sigs, but if there are lots of moons, that becomes quite tedious.

Yup, imo it's less effort to just get better at scanning the ships than to filter out all the pos crap.

You could make a bear hunting overview tab and scan with that but as I said, just get better at scanning ships.

Scanning ships is inherently easier as you can just sit on the undock and grab their ID there and then ignore all the others. This of course assumes you are targeting specific people instead of just scanning at random.

As for scanning MTUs, there are also the times when there might not be anyone in the mission and you just want to clean up their garbage before they come back and/or they forgot about it.

The magpie is actually pretty damned difficult to scan, I left one behind once. Never mind! Go fit a cheap scanner and look for it. But no; I had to get a tech 2 scanning ship, complete with tech 2 scanning modules to pin that beach down.

Also, last time I checked, if you leave the region your MTU is in it stops tractoring. It has been some time since I tested that though.

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

Please Note: Any advice given comes with the caveat that nothing will be suitable for every situation.

I'm pretty sure it still works if you are off grid, although it's been a few months since I used one. Six months ago I was ratting a lot and dropped one at every anomaly, then came back after I did 4 or 5 to loot/salvage

To the op - if you are using an mtu in missions then you are doing it wrong. The loot and salvage from regular npc rats is not worth taking the time to collect. Instead, just blitz the missions - complete them as fast as possible and you will do better on an isk/hr basis. Ofc if you have ocd and feel that you must loot and salvage the rats then when someone invades your space, just scoop mtu and ignore them - unless of course you feel like you want some pvp - but remember its likely not to be just them - but them and their buddies in logi ships (and a booster somewhere hidden in system).
