I managed to get eve running on linux after a day of tweaking, and thought I'd share here in the hope it may help others.

I'm on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) on a Macbook pro 8,3 (yes, I prefer linux on my mac), this comes with an ATI card for which you can choose either the open source drivers (radeon), or the proprietary ones (fglrx). Whilst I prefer the former, I needed the latter to get eve to work.

To see if your card is ready for eve, check for the following glx output:

Quote:

$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

$ glxinfo | grep s3
GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc

If this is not present than first verify if you are using fglrx instead of the open source radeon drivers. glxinfo will say "glx vendor string: ATI" when using fglrx.

Wine

I decided on using the latest wine (1.3.35 at the time of writing) from the official WineHQ PPA: . I also used winetricks to ease installation of some required components:

Quote:

$ sudo apt-get install winetricks
$ winetricks corefonts
$ winetricks vcrun2005
$ winetricks vcrun2008 (not sure if really needed)

Then run the eve installer. I used the 'offline' installer and pre-downloaded the two data files the installation needs.

Now you should be ready to launch eve. Some issues may arise though:

Compiz

I heavily use compiz (and if you run Unity, the ubuntu default, you do too) so wanted eve to play along nicely with compiz. I found that this works better when running eve in windowed mode. It also seems to help to set General > Composite > Undirect Fullscreen Windows in the Compiz Settings Manager (ccsm) and perhaps General > OpenGL > Sync to Vblank if you experience flickering issues.

In winecfg -> graphics -> window settings I have:
- Automatically capture the mouse in full screen windows
- Allow window manager to decorate the windows
- Allow window manager to control the windows

I run eve itself on fairly low graphics settings to keep performance high.

Graphics issues?

If you have graphics problems with fglrx, you could try the very latest Xorg + fglrx from the Xorg-edgers PPA . I found it fixed some issues. It's not entirely without risk of breaking your X though, but it worked for me.

If you do want to try the open source radeon driver instead of fglrx then you also need Xorg-edgers, and make sure to install libtxc-dxtn from Xorg-edgers to get the S3TC texture support. For me however this resulted in Eve starting and running 'fine', but without any textures.. so I couldn't even see my own ship. If anybody knows a fix for this then that would be appreciated.

Sound issues?

If you have sound issues, run winecfg and explicitly set your correct audio output instead of 'default'. I do however have the problem that eve blocks all other sounds, so when eve is running, other apps don't get a chance to play sounds. If anybody knows a solution to this than that would be nice.

Sound: In Ubuntu sound goes through pulseaudio by default but latest wine versions have some problem with it. The solution seems strange but it works - change windows version to windows XP in wine. This does work but sometimes sound will disappear. The only solution I know of is to restart pulseaudio (pulseaudio -k) and restart eve.

Open your eyes. And awaken.

I've not found pulse audio to be anything other than a pain the arse. On all Ubuntu boxes I set up for people I know will be using it more than a casual browser, I remove pulse audio and replace it with ALSA for the sheer convenience of reliability.

Can confirm that this works on latest Nvidia drivers too. Oddly simple...
