Question about freighter "ganking"

Wasn't sure if this was the appropriate place to put this thread. If it's not, please move.

I know holding a player in one place for to long can get you in trouble with CCP. My question is, how long? I've been wanting to get involved with freighter ganking. I want to gank freighters for profit. The method that I have would require the freighter to be held (scrammed) for ~10 minutes or less. If the freighter pilot doesn't pay a ransom, he gets blown up. If he pays a ransom, he gets let go.

I want to know to what extent is holding allowed? I don't want to get an entire fleet in trouble with CCP for something that I was unsure about. I know this whole area of EVE is a tad sketchy. CCP allows most things, but frowns upon other things. Thought I would be a good pirate and ask first. Lol

To my knowledge no one has ever been sanctioned for bumping a freighter trying to extract a ransom or to gather a fleet for a gank, including for many, many hours. Certainly 10 minutes or less with a warp scrambler is perfectly fine.

As stated in the official bumping thread, using bumping to hold down a ship is considered an emergent and perfectly acceptable use of the mechanics. A warp scrambler would be the same but without the emergent part as that is its primary function.

Of course no one here can give you a definitive answer - you would have to make a petition for that - but I assure you that delaying a freighter for 10 minutes isn't going to get anyone in trouble. Just don't try to extract a singing ransom from them or you might get banned for torture.

LOL. I have been informed that at Christmas time so long as the mood is 'festive' and it's 'good natured' that having a target sing an Xmas carol for their freedom is perfectly acceptable and I for one was not banned soliciting ransoms on our Caroling roam Twisted. As for when else is acceptable I'm not sure but I would guess that it is perfectly acceptable to do on occasion so long as you do it right. Besides I have made some great friends singing for my freedom. God people have paid me to stop Pirate. That'll serve them right for not having a TS admin on at the time Pirate

If you make them sing, then 'Careless Whisper' is a classic. The last guy I made sing it (Leto Thule) still cracks me up.

It's probably the greatest ransome song ever created.

Well, it sure sounds better than the recording I have of you from that night those two trannys were delivered to your residence, as per our agreement.

Horrifying.

Who said we had to quit GalMil to gank freighters?

Thanks for the replies guys. In retrospect, it was a really stupid question, but when it comes to things like the EULA, I want to be sure that me and CCP are on the same page.

Personally I ticket CCP before doing something that skirts close to a rule. They are really quite reasonable tbh

if your holding them and actively fighting/nonsensically butt playing/ ransoming/ talking to them then you are engaging in game play. and i would take that to court.

When I had time to play, our time of holding someone wasn't ever based on whether it was or would be OK with CCP. It always came down to whomever followed them through the pipe. The longer between other pilots being sighted, the longer the fun.

But I have to agree with Syds Sinclair here. It's a sad state of affairs that players now feel they need to ask such a question. It only highlights the toxic attitude that has leached from certain carebear and AG types, into the game.
Which is something that always amazed me tbh. They play a game known to be a certain way, then they carp and whine about it and want it changed.

I can tell you from experience that you can bump them until the fedos come home as long as you're ransoming them or holding them in place for some elite pvp.

Thus far, I've inferred that freighters can be held for as long as need be as long as the holders are trying to get something out of the freighter pilot (killmail or ransom). There is no way that one could possibly get in trouble with CCP for doing this. It would be nice if a CCP Dev or somebody could confirm this.

Devs and GM generally don't comment here, as mentioned if you want an official answer, file a petition.
