! means bang. bang means not. != not equal.
# <- this is a pound sign. Used for denoting weight, or for comments in certain dead languages.
Calling it anything else is heresy.
* denotes a variable. For example rm -r *.*

Now that I've thoroughly dated myself I shall go lament the fact that I am now out of beer.
That and dig up my old linux box and see if it still works... because my C-64 seems to be lost.

Don't forget that # also indicates when a statement is particularly witty or insightful for a number of semi regular posters.
