There is whole story about it. Its like with those armored planes in WW2, you have to reinforce the weak points, and those are not that you see watching the survivor.

Exactly, nice image (for a aviation AND WW2 buff like me, heh). You don't need to add armor to the engine of a P-47 based on its abbility to take damage, rather you should armor the cooling systems of the P-51 as they're being downed by single shots.
