Holidays in Iceland?

Yes, we have a lot of holidays and then we get ample summer vacation as well (normal/minimum is 24 business days per year).

When looking at http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/iceland/ then please note that there are three categories there

  • National holiday
  • Observance
  • Season

only one of which (National holiday) are days off, and some of them always fall on Sundays (Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday). We also don't move "floating" holidays to the next Monday or Friday, if such a holiday happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday in a particular year then you don't get that day off extra in that year.

(Some of the Observance entries are wrong, e.g., we don't celebrate Valentine's Day.)

yes ..I understand that if they float on a weekend then it`s tough ***** .... and I get that.

interested to know though on average Icelandic companies grant their employees work holidays .?

we in the UK get the worst deal in Europe when it comes to national holidays although I currently 30 days per year from my company excluding national holidays

would be interesting to see which years all of those Icelandic national day fall on a week day though .


as far as I know the USA get an even worse deal than us .. summat like 10 days a year my wife tells me .. but they do get "duvet days " which I personally think is really good .

Here in the US the Avg number of Holidays for most companies is 13.

The U.S. needs more, paid, observed by all, holidays. We might stress out less.
