So I don't know much about them but read a lot of bitching about them being too numerous in Null. Why not just make them require fuel to operate? Not just for jumps.

It would give you a balancing vector that can limit the duration a SC can stay on grid without resupply.
The only other method I could think of would be to create a area effect where a SC close to another SC causes a detrimental effect to their stats.

I think you're missing something here about supercarriers, which is that they cannot ever dock. Once most characters enter a supercarrier, they only leave it if it is destroyered or being handed off to another character.

Hence, I'm not sure by what you mean by "operate"? How does this stop them from quickly annihiliating a larger capital fleet? What would happen if you ran out of fuel? For that matter, what is to keep alliances from deploying tens of carriers to refuel their supercapitals (which wouldn't be any great stretch for most supercarrier-using alliances; half the time they mix a number of carriers in for RR support already).
