Reducing mfg cost index by moving 1 jump farther away.

I can cut my manufacturing index by about 1.7% by moving 1 jump farther from my sale hub than my current location.

I am mostly making items that require more minerals than I can move in an amount of time I deem acceptable so I'm paying hauling costs.

I'm gonna do some manual calculations to see what I can learn.

Just looking for any "rule of thumb" guidance.

Thanks,

Ken

Depending on the system, you could be the reason why it is 1.7% higher.

Personally, I don't pay any attention to the indices, let alone worry about 1.7%

Say you manufacture 10bil/month and it takes you an extra 2hours/month to go the extra jump if you are buying and selling from jita or some other hub. Then at 1.7% savings, as long as your time is worth less than 85mil/hour it makes sense to move.

I forgot to mention that I own 4 Charon and 2 Rhea. I plan to add another Charon shortly.

Hauling Tritanium is a PITA, but I really wouldn't notice an extra jump.

As Shakuul posted, you have to decide what it is worth to you.

Don't neglect his first sentence when you are estimating your expected savings.

This is Important advice and a good caution before I pick up and move a few AU away.

Even with my noob eyes I can discern I altered the local market for at least one item in my portfolio.

Further question:

How are you managing to play 4 or 5 alts to run the freighters?

I've got a second char on my single account that has slightly better piloting skills than my production guy. The hassle of setting up private contracts drove me to the point of just moving stuff with my mine char. If I have aspirations to a high-end freighter, that strategy isn't going to work long-term.

1. Login all accounts (windowed mode).
2. Form a fleet.
3. One character takes pile of trit and fills cargo.
4. Same character passes remainder of pile to next character via trade window (right-click character, select "Trade").
5. Set a route to the destination.
6. Repeat from 3 until all cargo is filled, or nothing left to haul.
7. Go though all windows and click "undock", fleet commander first, then click on next gate or station on overview.
8. Fleet commander warps group to next gate or station.
9. When at gate or station, go through all windows and click on "jump" or "dock", fleet commander first, then click on next gate or station on overview.

My laptop is not a gaming laptop, but it is considered a "media" laptop (whatever the heck that is), and I can run 5 clients by setting all graphics to minimum or disabled, and minimizing clients that I don't need to interact with. I can run 6 clients on my desktop PC without minimizing, but if I don't reduce graphics, there is considerable lag when undocking.

Note: zooming-out to max camera range helps too.

To keep the fleet together after undock, you just align, wait for everyone to reach at least 75%, then warp the fleet. This is not necessary after a jump through a gate.

Would corporate hanger access and roles help?

We did a check on this by looking at "Manufacturing Jobs started in the last 24 hours" on the map. It turned out that our small Corporation doesn't contribute significantly to the System Index, moving further away from the trade hub wouldn't affect it unless we went a long way out to an almost unused location.

So it is only the balance between convenience of short travel time and the higher wage bill for factory workers we have to consider. Right now we are in favour of convenience!

Raw Material aquisition isn't a problem right now, we buy/mine locally and the freighter coming back from deliveries makes up any shortfall.

Shiloh,

I've got an office in my manufacturing station which makes outbound easy. It is probably worth the convenience of doing same at my sales hub....even with the cost involved. Short of intra-personal contracts it is probably going to be my best solution as a one-man manufacturer.

how local?

Are you buying materials only from the station in which you are manufacturing?

From there and a couple of nearby systems, on Buy orders. Miners don't seem to like travelling to sell.

If you list buy orders at prices comparable to jita or closest trade hub. People will sell to you instead.
