Was surprised when nothing really came up about this on search as I would assume it's a common question butsince I can't access the old forums for some reason I'm going to ask anyway.

I'm flying a navy armageddon at the moment and I'm unsure what to use on it. not enough sp to use tech II yet. Using Dual modulated pulse energy beams at the moment as I like the ridiculously fast rate of fire, but not sure if it would be more efficient to use beams whn combined with the rate of fire ship bonus.

I've looked into megapulse but I'm enough of an aesthetics whore that the fact the models are too big for the ship gets to me (sorry for being fussy).

What are you using it for? If you're missioning you'll probably want to use beams for the range until you can use scorch.

I thought this too at first, then I realized they're not. When you enter warp, watch how the turrets tuck away. When you come out of warp it's just the hardpoint covers moving to the side that make it look too big.

I don't always post on the forums, but when I do, I post with my main.

It's not a common topic because one is not better than the other. Like most other things in EVE, there is no 'better.' Both Pulses and Beams have their place.

Most people focus on Pulse's for their high damage with good tracking, and fit to deal with the shorter range (either with speed or range enhancers).

Beams are less common but only because a lot of ship fitters are damage whores or EFT warriors looking for the higher dps number. Beams will hit ships far out but do so with less tracking and damage done. Most people train beams as a stepping stone to Tachyons.

Using Tachyons is akin to sniping with a cannon. Tachs will hit ships very far out for the most possible damage but are very skill intensive to use effectively (i.e. most people wait until they can fit Tach 2s as faction Tachs are very expensive with marginally better tracking and lighter fitting reqs.)

Either way, Pulses or Beams, the main damage boost comes by fitting T2 ammo - don't waste time/isk/energy on faction guns... Just skill up so you can buy T2 weapons at a fraction of the cost and most importantly, fire T2 ammo (higher base dmg being multiplied by the gun's dmg modifier).

Most of the time you'll end up with a better ship if you go with megabeams over Tachs. The fitttings and capacitor requirements are pretty horrendous off of the ships that seem custom built for them (Oracle, Nightmare, Paladin). I once had a Tach Abbadon mission ship (I think I got it back when I returned to Eve?) and it was REALLY fragile. It worked really well when paired with a CNR and the only tank either of them had was RR drones - but I don't delude myself into thinking that was the most efficient use of my time. For PVP I've often found that they absolutely murder your buffer and thus aren't worthwhile.

Dont go Beam. Go Pulse! Fit them with tracking computers and sensor boosters with scripts to make a 50KM fall off sniper pulse FTW! That way if they get close you can change scripts on the fly and use drone for close combat :)

I trained T2 for tachy's as everyone says this is the way to fly a NM for missions. After training T2 mega pulses for incursions I have found I prefer the pulses for missions over the tachy's. Need to be using T2 mega's as you will need the scorch to get damage a range. Also as mentioned fit tracking computers and enhancers.
