What makes one Matari?

As to not derail the thread about the Empire and it's wranglings with Max Singularity, I started this.

So, what is it, in your view that allows one to be Matari?

As someone who has been making an attempt in good faith with connecting with the heritage of my blood, this is something that I think about a great deal now. I have done many things that have hurt my people, for a long time I didn't consider them my people even, but I always still wanted what is best for everyone even during that time.

I want to get to know the tribe of my blood, I want what is best for my friends, my family, my alliance, my tribe, and my people. I suppose I shouldn't care what others think, but since the discussion was already going on, lets have it.

1/2 oz (1 part) Dry vermouth, 3 oz (6 parts) Gin

Preparation: Straight: Pour all ingredients into mixing glass with ice cubes. Stir well. Strain in chilled martini cocktail glass. Squeeze oil from lemon peel onto the drink, or garnish with olive....... Oh, wait, you said Matari...... Nevermind.

A little trust goes a long way. The less you use, the further you'll go.

Simple,

Genetic markers that match the markers that are commonly identified as Matari and/or citizenship within the Minmatar Republic.

Next?

And yes, always gin.

Gin, yes. Of course.

Otherwise, being accepted and/or born into a tribe.

My feelings are actually not that far removed from Mr Mokk's.

Beyond genetics or place of birth, you also need to accept your own heritage.

Acceptance by others, be it individuals or a tribe, has always felt secondary. I've been taught and live by the credence that you can indeed choose your family. No one can tell you whether or not you are Matari but yourself.

Only outsiders would claim Gin. A true Matari would punch them in the face and proclaim the virtues of either Vodka or Whiskey. (Note: do not make the wrong choice, the Vodka and Whiskey coalitions have a great enmity for each other.)

Being Minmatar by birth is the surest way. Kinship exists regardless of culture. Sometimes outsiders can become part of a Clan or Tribe, then they are Minmatar as well.

Pilot Valentina: even someone like you is my Kin. This does not mean you are forgiven for being an enemy of the Minmatar People. It simply means we're closer to you than the rest of our enemies. Maybe someday you will earn the forgiveness of your people.

A strong desire to better your clan or tribe. A deep desire to understand your ancestors and what lessons can be learned from your elders. If you are one, really just caring for your kin, their well being, their safety, ect.

Vodka is for peasants.

And only a savage would mix a single malt whiskey with anything.

@drinks, Gin is the stepping stone. Vodka and Whiskey are for those of a) stronger disposition and b) not those who are relied on to repair damaged ships. Drunk engineers, yay.

As for kin... I care for all Minmatar. But those who have turned their backs on us entirely... well, they can't simply be forgiven for anything.

Give me straight shots of whiskey and I'm good.

As for those that turned their backs on us..... Forgiveness is possible, but a long road awaits your acceptance back into the fold.

And for what makes a Minmatar a Minmatar? Biologically: your DNA. Socially: acceptance by your Tribe, adherence to our laws, loyalty to your kin, and the ability to fashion an assortment of reliable weapons out of a box of spare parts helps too....

If they turn their back on us they shouldn't be forgiven, if they turn back, well if they show their dedication to making up their misgivings, I'd think they should be looked at again. Obviously not in the same light for a long time. If they truly see the errors in their ways they'll press on...

What makes one Matari?

Usually a Mommy Matari and a Daddy Matari.

Sometimes twins.

Matari are not 'allowed' to be so. Matari cannot escape being so.

It matters not where you go or what you do, whether you accept or reject: the blood of every ancestor who came before, who rose and fell to preserve the unseen future that is you, permeates your being. The bond can be unmade no more than you can be unborn.

I'm not Matari, so I have no real say in the matter.

I came instead to respond simply to the nature of the original question:

That you seek to understand what it means to be Matari should not be discouraged. It is not so simple as "I should probably not care what others think," because the very nature of the question revolves around what others think (namely, the Matari).

Do not shy away from reflection, embrace it. There is much to gain from viewing oneself candidly and honestly. May you find the answers you seek.

"Though the people may hate me, that does not relieve me of my charge."
