It's Whale game development.

Mobile Gaming Monetization: If You Aren't a Whale, You Might as Well Be Sleeping With the Fishes

Love the reference to Moby ****. Yes. It was about hunting whales in rickety boats. Wonder if they read the book.

$10-$20 for IAPs is the sweet spot huh? Just so happens that is about what CCP is charging for the new SKINs. CCP gonna harpoon some whales.

The overall proportion of payers has been declining for years, along with fewer whales but an increase in developer dependence on the whales that remain.

Outside of a few (admittedly well known) outliers F2P is not a sustainable business model and it never was. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that a game designed and built from the ground up to suck your money like an 80s arcade game is overwhelming likely to be a **** game.

Path of Exile is also doing pretty well, both in terms of revenue and in terms of being a damn good game (which I've played extensively) that doesn't try to "nickle-and-dime" you to death.

I don't think the F2P model per se is flawed, it all depends on the execution of said model, and PoE proves this (I'm not talking about mobile F2P games specifically, something I don't have direct experience with).

Both of those are PC games. There are enough genuinely good F2P PC games that I can see how it would work here. However, keep in mind all the failures it took to get to the current model over the last half-decade or so and the fact that PC gaming trends historically run a generation ahead of consoles (and mobile, by extension)

But, this thread is about mobile games. Games that are by and large designed from the ground up around a marketing gimmick intended to maximize the return they get from their (most likely) brief popular exposure (if they even get that far) in a massively oversaturated market.

I agree except for one point.
80s games were actually fun to beat.
They were so ******* hard that beating them was an actual achievement
and it improved actual skills.

Hell ... Space Invaders is a ******* NIGHTMARE ........

Also, this thread is about mobile games,
but I don't see much difference to other plattforms.

Nowadays pretty much most companies manipulate people
into throwing money at them. Or try to reach their lower instincts.

It's a ******* nightmare if you think of the bigger picture.

Whole industries turned people into mindless idiots from early ages.
