Level 2 Security - When can I start?

First time playing Eve and character is less than a month old.

I've been doing Level 1 Security missions and they are trivial easy to do.

I want to jump to Level 2 but I only have a Destroyer (Thrasher).

Can I take out a Cruiser if I use the proper damage type and shield myself against their damage?

Level 1 rats are not getting through my shield and in almost all cases barely scratching it.

I'm thinking about switching out the Damage Control (since it is mainly good for armor) for something else.

Since it is a Thrasher (and I have some spares from Career agents) I might just try it.

But if anyone has advice I'd appreciate it.

You will have no issues in level 2 missions from the NPCs, except Mission of Mercy.

You can certainly fit a cruiser for missions, there are several popular ones. Fit your cruiser tank with 1 repair module (shield or armor), 2 resistance hardeners, maybe an oversized (large) extender (or plate if you're doing armor).

The majority of the enemies you'll see in L2 missions will be frigates, with some cruisers as bosses. Keep in mind that frigates like to orbit closely, and long range cruiser guns (rails, beam lasers, artillery) will have trouble tracking that. You can fit short range guns, or go with a missiles or drones cruiser. Cruisers are slower, so you may not be able to kite frigates as well as with your destroyer.

To the original question from your title.
You need a standing of 2.0 or above to run level 2 missions.
You need 3.0 or above to run level 3.
And 5.0 or above to run level 4.

Easiest way to determine if you can run level 2 missions AND find the closest level 2 agent is to open the agent finder in game.
Select the NPC you want to run missions for.
Select the type of missions you want.
Click the check box so only the ones you have standing for will show.
Then set the slider to "2" for level 2 and you will have your answers.
If it is blank then you do not have standing for level 2, if you do it will show you a list of agents and where they are located.


Your Thrasher should do well in level 2's if flown properly and that includes Mission of Mercy which is one of the hardest to complete level 2 missions in the game.

I suggest for now that you leave the DCU in place as you transition into level 2 missions and let the results there determine if you leave it on or replace it with something else. It is simply not true that it is primarily an armor tank module, the DCU increases hp for shields and armor. They do increase armor slightly more than shields, if memory serves me the T2 variant boost shields by 13% and armor by 15% so even though there is a difference it is very small.

When you do step up to your level 2 missions caution is advised as every part of them is increased. More ships, larger ships, they move faster and in a ship to ship comparison they have increased damage output and damage resistance capabilities.

And you need to bookmark this web page and refer to it often.

You actually only need 1 standing for level 2 missions.

when I moved into lv2s I was mostly using a cruiser with a frigate tank. Although it was a cracal with a LSE and a small booster, so some mix of active and buffer tank. at some later point I used an omen with a small armor rep and resist mods. So a destroyer could do lv2s, but I think the extra firepower of a cruiser is usually better, but it can go wrong if small ships get under your guns. the cool thing about that though is that most cruisers have a drone bay, and drones do a pretty good job against most npcs.

the main thing I'd change about your fit is swapping the overdrive for a gyrostablizer. for lv1s you probably don't need the Damage control, but if you are going to jump up and try lv2 missions you might want to keep it. Oh and I'd also probably change the invuln for a specific resist. double the resist you want and half the cap use.

Oh yea and get some rigs! they don't actually need skills to fit which is a nice little change from a few patches ago.

More general rundown on security missions to save people some google time:

Level 1 missions: no standing requirement (accessible even if you're negative)
Designed for T1 frigates, destroyer to faceroll them easily

Level 2 missions: 1.0 standing
Designed for Destroyers/T2-fit frigates, Cruiser to faceroll

Level 3 missions: 3.0 standing
Designed for Cruisers, Battlecruisers or T2 Cruisers to faceroll

Level 4 missions: 5.0 standing
Designed for Battleships/T3 cruisers, can sometimes be done with BCs if you're feeling awesome


Standing requirement is satisfied with any applicable standing, e.g. for level 2 missions you need 1.0 standing with either the agent himself, the corporation to which the agent belongs, or the empire that sponsors that corporation.


Security mission fitting general rules of thumb:
-- With armor, active tank (usually one armor repairer and some resists)
-- With shield, usually active tank, though Drake can passive pretty easily
-- pick two resists associated with the enemy (e.g. for serpentis kinetic + thermal) for your tank
-- Use DCU whenever you're unsure or worried about your tank breaking (it gives you a lot of structure HP)

That is a decent page for general resists for the various races that can also be helpful.

Some general advice for moving forward small ships and weapons (frigates and destroyers ) train pretty fast. Medium ships and weapons ( cruisers and battlecruisers ) are not too bad. Large ships and weapons ( battleships ) take a long time and I think new players should avoid them.

The assault frigates ( a.k.a. AF, tech 2 frigate ) are very powerful and I've run many level 3's in one. So if you are liking the feel of the small ships you can get pretty far in them if you go tech 2. The Heavy Assault Cruisers ( a.k.a. HAC, tech 2 cruiser ) can run many of the level 4s and T2 BCs should be able to run any level 4. Currently T3 cruisers are also very powerful and able to run any level 4 but they are scheduled to be smacked around with the nerf bat soon.

Depending on what you like doing and plan on doing in the future will determine the path that you take but I wanted to point out that you have many options for moving to more difficult PvE and also wanted to caution against running strait into a BS as bigger is not always better and BSs take a lot of skill points to fly well. In most cases you are better off isk wise sticking to level 3s early on.

Thank you all for the advice.

I have enough standing to get level 2 missions already and I've been using EVE Survival to get the correct ammo to use.

I took that fit into a level 2 and it went "okay".

My main problem was that the enemy was longer range and I got pretty hammered. I had to warp out once to rebuild the shield.

I'll try swapping in a resist specific shield for the next mission. If I can half the damage it should work fine.

I also looked at putting 250mm Arty but that will need to wait for a bit of money to be saved up.
(I spent my "free" cash on getting +3 implants to drop training times)

PS: I am going to head off to do the Sister of Eve arc soon. I made the mistake of buying up the sklllbooks I want to train and now I don't want to risk flying around with them. But now I need to wait another day or two to get the prerequisites trained to inject.

You also only need to do one level 1 mission, if you have Connections 3 trained.

Most level 2 missions are suitable for a frigate or destroyer, as these missions typically have at most 1 NPC cruiser. The mission "Mission of Mercy" is an exception, and is best done in a sniping cruiser.

A cruiser fitted with rapid light launchers, or small multi-barrel turrets, is otherwise suitable for the mostly small ships encountered. Don't use weapons meant for medium targets, unless you can pop frigates easily with them. (example: arty rupture)

Keep moving, and you shouldn't have a problem.
