This is an incorrect question. The correct question should be, "at a specific volume of trading, how long would it take to begin seeing a return from paying someone a specific amount of isk to boost my standing."

This is a no lose investment, and so long as you have the isk you should pay for it because everytime you make a trade you lose funds that could have been earned toward paying back the investment in this service.

The answer is as soon as you can.

I do it on my own- if you are trading, you could simply run missions in the same region, that way you trade, run missions and boost standings at the same time. Of course I do it only when I am bored sitting at the station or when there are no new TV series to watch. My broker fee is almost the lowest possible now, yet I am still doing missions...Why? Because of the few extra funds, action I get and because I want 10/10 standings even if it takes forever. I am not in a hurry. :)

I am still at 9.99. And I want 10 base, not after connections 5 :) As for faction - it will really take forever, especially how I don't like doing Penumbra quite often :) (like every 3 months). Oh, I did all tutorials for all races...I am so sick of them now.

Is there a difference in standing increase per mission between, say, Distribution & Security fields?

Join faction warfare - the first few promotions should be easy to do and will give you a decent faction standing boost. If you can be bothered, that is.
