So I was reading EvE universe (the shiney new art book) and came across this
pg 141
Quote:
A capsuleer killed out of her capsule might die permanently, and if not, she will lose much time in the gap between her backup's creation and her new cloning.

So is that CCP actually confirming soft cloning as actual canon rather than RPer backstory extrapolation and fudging?
CCP has always been non-vocal when it comes to soft clones, neither confirming, nor denying their existence.

That confirms backup clones. It is not a confirmation of soft clones (soft clone being defined as a slow brain scan that doesn't destroy the brain in the process).

So, backup clones are indeed a thing. Soft clones however are still up in the air.

Hmmm. Alright. So-- periodically, I could euthanize to have a duplicate mind-state stored even as I'm burned into a new clone?

Capsuleers must go through a lot of biomass...

I was under the impression soft clones and backup clones are the same thing. Effectively, what's the difference between being killed and sent to a soft clone vs a backup clone?

In Character: Only responds to "Lord Draconis"

Pronounced "Vulzanis"

A backup clone can be created through a burn scan. You go to a lab, get euthanized and cloned, while having a copy of your data saved to file as an emergency backup.

A soft clone on the other hand is you go to a lab, get slow scanned and have that data saved to file, then walk out in the same body you came in with.

I do not quite understand why people would have a strong preference for 'soft clone' versus a backup? I cannot think of that many fiction circumstances where it would be required rather than fitting in euthanasia and a backup.
