Admittedly this is an old game. I have been looking at it and I really enjoy games like this (used to play Baldur's Gate online via a modem). Sadly, this one is a single player. I do dream about playing it multi-player, with a good world builder.
Table top D&D meets online game sort of thing.

Likely, this might just be a bit of a time killer for you while a fleet is forming up or you are on a gate camp or mining, hope you do enjoy it.

only played a little bit of baldurs gate but loved the old turn based fallout games

I played Fallout 1 but at some point I was on the surface, died to some group of punks when wanting to collect bottle caps or something and took a break then never went back to it or any of the subsequent games, I guess I lost interest. My memory of it is rather vague now.

I think I like this sort of group, top down third person view because it feels more strategic.

Actually it's pretty new. It came out a bit over three years ago.

Now the original Avernum is a little older, but still not as old as you might think.

For other similar works, check out Eschalon (more fluid motion, gameplay more Diablo-esque), or Geneforge (fascinating story behind the Shapers).
