Recently did a reinstall of Wine and some other stuff. Set my architecture to x32 for better compatibility with a larger variety of games.

Xubuntu 14.04
Wine 1.7.18 running in WINEARCH=win32

Ran the requisite:

winetricks corefonts d3dx9_36 vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010

Disabled d3d11.dll via winecfg.

Now when I launch it, (either from the Launcher, which works, or from exefile.exe,) it loads a black screen with a small spinning dial in the lower-left corner. Never reaches Character Select.

Any ideas? I'll admit that I'm stumped, I used to be able to get it working on my own.

EDIT: And I just ran the launcher one more time, and its now downloading 275mb for some reason. 20 minutes ago it was saying "Client is ready" when I launched it. Will post results of this download when it completes. Crappy internet here, it'll be like 30 minutes or so.

EDIT2: Download completed. Loaded to a black screen with the spinny thing in the lower left again. Waiting long enough, it did EVENTUALLY bring up Character Select. Selected a character and it said "Connecting....." and went back to a black screen. It eventually loaded me in, where I could see my inventory, etc, but the station background is just black, no picture or ship or anything.

Thought; is this the "Download on Demand" thing just choking on my crappy ISP?

I had some similar problems when switching between the launcher and the exefile. It may be that the local texture cache is not shared between both mechanisms, so you are effectively downloading several gigabytes every time you login. I would stick to the launcher, even though it is IMO a less reliable solution than before.

I did figure it out. Turns out, it WAS DoD choking on my 1.5mb DSL line.

Set it to "Download everything" and then manually migrating my shared cache over from prior WINE installation. Ran the launcher again, and it had to download about 200mb, (as opposed to 7gb, which would've been a 9-10 hour process.)

After that, it seems to be responding normally again. Download on Demand just does NOT work for a rural area.

DoD seems to be an issue with Linux in general, for some reason the way they implemented it doesn't agree with WINE very much. I've got a 50mbps FiOS connection and still had to force "Download everything" on all my clients to get it to work in linux. (fedora 21).

Also I do recommend upgrading to wine 1.7.30 or higher, there were alot of compatibility patches in 7.30 and 7.31 that make eve run even better. I run 3 clients simultaneously at 45+ fps, on windows 2 clients lags me down to about 20fps.
