D-scanning Rats/Sleepers

Is it possible?

I was recently in a wormhole, using d-scan about once every fifteen seconds. I did not see a group of sleepers approaching until they were about 50km away (at which point they appeared on my overhead). Furthermore, I did not see them on the scan even after I knew they were there.

I escaped, but it was too close for me.

Is there something wrong, or does one just not see NPCs on the d-scanner?

You do not see NPCs on d-scan. You can see their wrecks however, which can be a good indication there is someone else in there with you.

Your overview is bad if you didn't see them on there when you landed/they spawned

Well, how do I make my overview not-bad?

I heard that you used to be able to see NPCs on D scan but it was long before my time. From what I've heard they got rid of it early on because you were able to warp into a system and just use D scan to check for faction and officer spawns instead of having to warp around and check the belts yourself.

Honestly, I think that was changed more for usability than anything else.

Eve has always had the worst UI in video-game history, but having 1000000 NPCs completely prevent you from actually seeing what you're looking for was bad even by Eve standards, not to mention a bit pointless since you couldn't GET to them without probing them anyhow.

Sleepers only appear in very specific locations in wormholes. Combat sites, relic/data sites, ore sites, and gas sites. I would hazard a guess that you were mining in one of the latter and the Sleepers spawned after some time (they normally spawn 10-20 minutes after the first person warps to the site). In addition to NPCs not appearing on dscan, you wouldn't have seen them anyway because they hadn't spawned yet.

Google "wormhole ninja mining" for some more info on dodging sleepers. (Basically mine as much as you can in 15 minutes and then bug out before/when the sleepers spawn).

No, they had it right the first time. D-scanning faction spawns was OP.

The "usability" problem is trivially solved by filters.
