Better performance with an APU and video memory taken from the main memory pool?
Duh.

I'm sorry. What do you mean by that?

Well, it's an integrated video chip that has to be squeezed in a certain heat package. That is, your CPU + GPU combo can't consume more than... eeehhh... 65? Or 95 watts? Consider that modern mid-range GPUs eat 250ish watts under load and think about the implications.

Also being a single APU chip it obviously lacks onboard memory, so it has to use the regular system memory for it's video memory. Which is slower in itself (GDDR5 is about 3 times faster than an average DDR3) and AFAIK with a much narrower bus width (64bit for system memory and usually 192-256bit for proper videocards).

For example, I have an HD4870 at home which is what? 7 or 8 years old. According to various online charts it should be about 2 times faster than modern integrated GPUs.

Because of what you said I checked again. It has 4 GB memory integrated in the APU/GPU in addition to it's 8 GB RAM.

As you can probably tell, I'm not partucularly knowledgeable about computers. Shouldn't an additional PU with 4 GB of memory help increase performance?

I'm asking because I want to find out if it's a hardware or software problem. Or if I am the problem.

You can't have memory integrated into an APU. APU looks like a normal CPU. It physically has no space for a dedicated memory.

What's your full specs?

AMD Phenom Quad-Core 4 GHz
RAM 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM
AMD Radeon HD 8570D, 4096 MB HyperMemory, DirectX® 11, VGA, HDMI

I've tried following the instructions here. Which resulted in the client not worling at all.

Ugggh. Something is wrong with those specs.
HD8570D is an integrated video in, I believe, AMD Kaveri APU line. They aren't called Phenom as far as I know. The phenom line were CPUs without integrated GPUs and have been discontinued since dunnowhen (now they have FX series instead).

And yes, HyperMemory is a fancy way to say your video memory is a lie.
