Hello everyone I recently made the switch to Linux mint 17.1 MATE and have been trying to get eve running correctly I got it installed via wine and it runs great minus the graphics everything is REALLY dark and it's hard to see anything really (minus the in-game menus, HUD and things of that nature) I also just tried installing it via playwithlinux with the same issue. Any ideas on a fix for this? you have no idea how grateful I would be. (I'm pretty new to linux so talk to me like a linux noob :) )

What videocard do you have?
What drivers do you use?

Please show output for
lspci | grep VGA
and
glxinfo | grep string

It looks like it's maybe nouveau and no s3tc.

Just copy and paste the commands (in italics) and post the feedback. Use the terminal.

Output would be like this:

core@CoreBox:~ > lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF114 [GeForce GTX 560 Ti] (rev a1)
core@CoreBox:~ > glxinfo | grep string
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 560 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.3.0 NVIDIA 331.113
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.30 NVIDIA via Cg compiler
OpenGL version string: 4.4.0 NVIDIA 331.113
OpenGL shading language version string: 4.40 NVIDIA via Cg compiler

Just open a terminal window and type the commands. Or copypaste. Then copypaste the result.
Well, ok, nevermind.
Looks like AMD + opensource drivers.
Try installing libtxc-dxtn. Both amd64 and i386 versions.

I think it should be called something like libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 considering mint is a flavour of ubuntu.
so
sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386

It's the most likely culprit because no textures would probably result in black textures, and s3tc is usually omitted by default in opensource drivers due to licensing issues.

Well done mate.

Did you switch to mint from another distro or from windows?

Well double gratz for making the big switch from windows.

I am using linux mint myself, really impressed with the cinnamon desktop. All though I have heard good things about the MATE desktop, especally for people that prefered the GNOME 2 desktop to the design philosophy of GNOME 3.

If you ever wanna mix things up you should try cinnamon also, after all its only a few terminal commands away :)

How are you doing getting all the 3rd party app alternatives, such as eft, comms, jabber, fraps etc?

I am having an identical issue.

I used the below command,
sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386

and my issue was resolved.

I'd like to know more about this as well. I can create a great non VM environment on one of my systems. Get the game working and patched. Then when I go to functional play I learn comms wont work or what not. So i have to keep Windows as the host PC and if I want to play with linux run it in VM. Of course I can't run EVE in a VM.

I am also running Linux Mint 17.1 with Cinnamon. I have recreated a lot of functionality. My only struggle now is GTKEveMon. I can seem to find all of the packages needed to compile the source.

Teamspeak & Mumble have native Linux clients that you can install and run.

Start the day off slow and taper off from there.

I think bluetooth was another sticking point with me. Anyone have luck with this working?

Eft: Pyfa (Python Fitting Assistant). Very similar to EFT and platform independent
Comms: As said above, just use the native TS3 or Mumble client.
Jabber: Pidgin is available for Linux and other OSes and supports XMPP (read: Jabber Protocol)
Fraps: Have a look at this thread. I used GLC in the past and it worked well for me.
Evemon: Apparently gtkevemon is alive. If you don't find that in your repositories, read on.

If you are on a binary based distribution like ubuntu, make sure, that you don't just install the libraries, but the development files as well. under ubuntu I believe this would be 'libssl-dev', 'libgtkmm-3.0-dev' and 'libxml++2.6-dev'

Then just as a user do:
git clone https://git@github.com/gtkevemon/gtkevemon
cd gtkevemon
make

and as superuser:
make install

then you should be able to run '/usr/local/bin/gtkevemon' from cli, a script, a launcher or what have you.

No idea what that's got to do with Eve, but from my experience, bluetooth works out of the box with *ubuntu and is better integrated and more intuitive to use than what I've seen from Windows. I suppose it depends on whether or not your particular BT device has driver support, so ymmv. Give this a read, if you feel so inclined. Especially when it comes to troubleshooting, the Arch Wiki tends to have a few good hints as well. It's specifically written for Arch Linux of course, but most of the things written there are just as true for other modern flavours of GNU/Linux.

I faced the same issue as OP. It was partially resolved thanks to the advice given here. However, windows inside the client still don't show up, including the settings window.

Here is the command output you requested.

00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Richland [Radeon HD 8570D]
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
client glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD ARUBA
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 10.1.0
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 3.30
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 10.1.0
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30

I hope you can help.

Edit: From what little I know, I suppose it is an issue with the amd-radeon GPU I recently started using. Perhaps I need a different version/different settings of wine to work with this. I had Eve running nicely on a PC using nvidia tech.

I believe your problem is you have a relatively recent GPU (also, isn't 8570D a part of an APU?) and a relatively old mesa.

Mesa 10.1.0 is already a year old, and the current version is something like 10.5.2.

I suggest you first try upgrading mesa to the latest version.

Ah, and if you had an NViia GPU on the same machine, maybe try a fresh wine prefix or fiddle with various wine options (i.e. you could have been using ARB shaders or some other tweaks you forgot about).

Thanks for the quick response!

I've tried upgrading mesa using the synaptic package manager, however it automatically marks several packages, including the cinnamon desktop I use, for removal. Which is irritating.

I've also tried getting help in the Linux Mint forums, but the thread I started there has yet to be approved by a a moderator.

Do you have any advice?

And thanks again, I probably wouldn't have noticed that Mesa is outdated otherwise.

Oh, and yes 8570D is part of an APU. I recently bought a new PC, plugged in my old HD containing Eve and have been trying to fix the very problems I had faced when I first started playing Eve ever since (i.e. since yesterday).

Well, the reason you have an old mesa is probably because your mint is based on ubuntu 14.04 which also has that mesa version.

You could probably find an ubuntu PPA with a fresh mesa for 14.04 (there IS one with the latest mesa and all the fancy stuff like gallium-nine, which you actually can probably use. I just don't remember it's name - try googling something like mesa ppa) and try plugging it in, though I'm not sure about the consequences. You'd also probably need a fresh kernel and a fresh Xorg (obtained in the same way). Aand if you want to try gallium-nine, you'll need a wine patched for that (also available in PPAs)/

Other than that I don't really know what's the proper way to get fresh stuff on mint. Well, other than building from source. Details on http://www.mesa3d.org/install.html , but you'll probably have to read documentation about debian/ubuntu packaging before that, because you'll be replacing the existing working mesa and video drivers which is SCARY. I've only done packaging with deb-sources, and that should be different from third-party source tarballs, so I can't give advices on that. Just remember to proceed with extreme caution and be ready to spend some time in console fixing borked drivers after a particulary bad make install (should get a separate working computer for that because you'll need googles).

PS: maybe adjusting various graphics settings (like shader quality) would help?

I've tried adjusting the graphics settings. It's running now, the only remaining issue is that I have worse FPS than I had on my last PC, which was nine years old. I'll see if I can find a way to use more up to date graphics software.
Ironically, I bought this new PC expecting better graphics performance. Boy was I wrong.

Better performance with an APU and video memory taken from the main memory pool?
Duh.

Though you can try gallium-nine. They say when it works, it WORKS (you may expect 50% performance increase).

Ar you may try fglrx drivers instead of opensource, but lately I don't think there's much point.
